Hanover ran riot in Ballon on Saturday afternoon, putting four goals past Ballymurphy to claim the Paul Kirwan Memorial Youths Cup but in reality, they could have scored ten, such was the control they had on the game. Liam Ryan up top but he was a constant menace up top for the Ballymurphy defence.
Hanover went close as early as the fifth minute when a Ryan free from the left was curled past the wall but hit straight at the Ballymurphy ‘keeper. Three minutes later, he was played in down the right and hit an effort wide at the near post. Shortly after, Ryan was in on goal but couldn’t get onto the end of the ball as it went straight into the Ballymurphy ‘keeper. With 18 minutes gone, Hanover took the lead, Cian Ray playing in Ryan down the right who put the ball into the far bottom corner. Midway through the half, a Ryan free from the left was cleared. Ballymurphy went close through a Jack Cummins corner from the right. Ben McCarron leapt up high to collect. On the half hour mark, Luke Murphy played in Lee Carpenter down the right and he put the ball into the bottom left hand corner to double Hanover’s lead. Two minutes later, a Cummins corner was cleared before a Jack Foley free on the edge of the box was cleared. With ten minutes to go until half-time a Cummins corner from the right wasn’t cleared properly, Luke Joyce got onto it down the left, the ball was again cleared but back to Cummins on the right. However, McCarron came out to clear. Two minutes later, a Cummins corner from the right was headed over by Joyce. With six minutes to go until the break, a Ryan corner for Hanover from the left which was hit into Cian Quirke who hit his effort at the ‘keeper. With two minutes to go, a Foley free was cleared. On the verge of the break, a Ryan free from the right was deflected over the bar with the resulting corner from the left being cleared.
Three minutes after the break, Ryan got his second as he hit an effort in from the left. Five minutes later, a Josh Brady effort from the left from distance was hit over the bar. On the hour mark, a Ryan free from the edge of the box looked set for the top left hand corner but he hit it off the post. Six minutes later, a Ryan effort from the left was hit across the face of the box. Brady made it four shortly after as a Ryan free was cleared, Ray tried to chip the ‘keeper but it fell back to Brady on the right and buried it into the bottom left hand corner. Ray went close again but his effort was saved. With 20 minutes to go, Ballymurphy went close as a Cummins free from the left was cleared. Two minutes later Ryan had an effort saved before another Ryan corner from the right was cleared. With ten minutes to go, a Ryan effort was hit well over before Joel Abu broke three minutes later down the right and squared for Ryan in the middle but the ‘keeper saved before he could get on it. In stoppage time, Ryan hit an effort from the left into the ‘keeper before a Cassidy effort was saved. Ray tried to hit the rebound in and hit it over the ‘keeper but it was cleared off the line. Cassidy’s rebound was saved.
