Round Tower Rovers 8

St Joseph’s FC 2

Rovers were making their debut in the Carlow league and they entertained Joey’s at their home ground in Timahoe.

Rovers saw plenty of possession in the early stages but they failed to take advantage of their opportunities. However, on ten minutes Alex Renehan slotted the ball home for 1-0 following a brilliant cross-field pass by Charlie McArdle. Joey’s were stung by this set-back and soon got on the front-foot as a fine pass by Dillon Darcy found Daniel Donegan in the box and he rattled home the equaliser for 1-1. Shortly after he scored his brace after a fine team move for Joey’s to take the lead at 1-2 and Rovers were stunned by this quick reverse. Rovers upped their game and they were soon back on level terms when Darren Robinson equalised with a brilliant strike from distance for 2-2. Just before the interval Alex Renehan scored again for his brace and a 3-2 lead for Rovers at half-time in what had been a topsy turvy game with end to end football.

The second half was completely dominated by Rovers as this young Joey’s team started to tire and gaps were starting to appear. Rovers took full advantage to score five more goals. Alex Renehan completed his hat-trick to make it 4-2 and then Jake Ratcliffe rattled in a quick-fire brace to make it 6-2, which included a fine assist by John Hardy and then Jamie Maher got in on the act as he scored for 7-2 and Conor Booth completed the scoring for 8-2, just before the final whistle.

Man of the match for Rovers was Alex Renehan for his fine hat-trick with a special mention to Conor Booth and the midfield engine room of Michael Conlan, Michael Rogers, Mick Kelly, Darren Robinson and Darragh Carolan, whilst standing out for Joey’s were Aongus O’Se, Dillon Darcy and Daniel Donegan.
