Thomastown United 4

Thomastown made the trip to Ballymurphy on Sunday looking to consolidate their position at the summit and had a comfortable afternoon.

They broke the deadlock on nine minutes with a long-range strike from Clionadh Donnelly and she doubled her tally ten minutes later with a similar effort. On 25 minutes Meghan Farrell went on a mazy taking on the Ballymurphy defence and coolly slotted past the keeper. Just after the half hour mark Louisa Woods got on the scoresheet while lobbying the advancing keeper. From here on the job was done and Thomastown coasted through the rest of the game with a fine team display.

Vale Wanderers 2 - 3 Thomastown United

Vale Wanderers 2

Thomastown United 3

This was a high tempo encounter between two good passing teams.

Vale opened the scoring on 22 minutes with a fine long-range strike from Keeva Collins. Thomastown started to settle into proceedings and levelled on 26 minutes with an instinctive finish from Ashling Brennan. Thomastown took the lead just before the break with a clever finish from Lauren McCormack to the right-hand corner of the goal.

The table toppers started the second half much the better and were two goals clear on the hour mark when Jenny Brennan scored a superb free kick. Vale continued to push forward however and were rewarded for doing so when the pacey Philomena Murphy got on the end of a cut back to score from close range to set up a thrilling finish. This would only prove to be a conciliation however as Thomastown held on for a hard-fought victory to consolidate their position at the top.

An excellent team performance from Vale with Noleen Maher, Aoife Roache and Keeva Collins standing out while Holly Brennan and Ashling Brennan and Sarah Welsh worked hard for the winners

Thomastown United 0 - 1 Mill Celtic

Thomastown 0

Mill Celtic 1

Two of the big three would go toe to toe in this quarter final in Kilkenny on Sunday afternoon.

Thomastown started much the brighter and had some early opportunities when Rachael Fennin was forced into a fine save from a Jenny Brennan header, then Eva Haynes played in Sarah Barcoe who unusually fired over. Megan Grufferty has Mill’s best chance in the opening half but she fired straight at the keeper.

The second half was a much more even contest with chances at a premium. Jenny Brennan had her free kick tipped over late on but the only goal came on 91 minutes when Triona Duggan broke the offside trap and her first time cross found Nicole Heaney who volleyed home.

A great team performance from both sides throughout this tight encounter.

Thomastown United 4 - 1 Hanover Harps

Thomastown United 4

Hanover Harps 1

Thomastown started this top of the table encounter much the stronger and were deservedly ahead on 15 minutes when Sarah Barcoe found the top corner from 25 yards.

The Hanover response was immediate and were level within 5 minutes when Leanne Tumelty’s fierce drive could only be parried by the Thomastown keeper and Rachael Whelan fired home the rebound. Sarah Barcoe would prove to be a torn in the side of the Hanover defence all day and on the half hour mark had her second when she latched onto Eva Haynes pass and her first time shot found the inside of the far post. Hanover probably should have levelled just before the break when another Tumelty cross found the usually reliable Essmay Murphy but she fired over from close range.

With the second half becoming more and more stretched as it progressed the pace in the Thomastown attack would prove to be the difference. On 65 minutes from a Hanover corner, they broke decisively and a Barcoe ball across the box somehow got to the back post where Aisling Brennan was waiting to pounce with a neat finish. With Hanover pushing to get back into proceedings they were caught on the break late on where the prolific Eva Haynes wrapped up a big three points for the Kilkenny side.

Jenny Brennan, Eva Haynes and the impressive Sarah Barcoe excelled for Thomastown while Leanne Tumelty, Kelly Nolan, Marie Hynes and Becky Walsh did well for Hanover.

Thomastown kept their hopes for Division One honours alive with an emphatic victory over a gallant Ballymurphy side.

Thomastown were in front in the second minute when an excellent passing move found Eva Haynes out wide and her first-time delivery into the box found Lauren McCormack who in turn steered it home from close range. Ten minutes later they were two up when Jenny Brennan expertly dispatched a 20-yard free kick to the top corner. Ballymurphy started the second half much the better and created some good chances but were unable to convert any of them. Then in the 75th minute Ballymurphy were undone from a counterattack when Eva Haynes chipped the on rushing bally keeper to secure the points.

Holly Brennan, Caoimhe Woods and Lisa Carey did well for Thomastown while Ann Murphy and Emma Cooper stood firm for Bally.

Following the mid season break Thomastown picked up where they left off and made an immediate impression in this game scoring inside seven minutes when Sarah Walsh was unmarked in the penalty area and made no mistake from close range. Eva Haynes doubled the lead on 15 minutes with an excellent strike from distance and ten minutes later would wrap up her hat trick with two more clinical strikes. Sarah Walsh would finish the half the way she started it with her second right on half time.

A much more energetic Fiaccs team started the second half and it wasn’t long before Kelly O’Neill reduced the arrears and then on 70 minutes when O’Neill got her second it would force Thomastown to go back through the gears and would duly do so when Caroline Barrow scored their sixth to seal the points.

Best for Fiacc’s were Sara Kerfah, Kate McDonald and Kelly O’Neill while Meghan Farrell, Eva Haynes and Jenny Brennan impressed for the winners.

A depleted Killeshin made the trip to Thomastown on Sunday afternoon.

Thomastown were on the scoresheet immediately after some good work from Meghan Farrell found Sarah Walsh in the box and she made no mistake. Thomastown scored another six in the opening half when Walsh got her second, Jennie Brennan added a brace, Eva Hynes then got in on the act but the goal of the game came just before the break when Caoimhe Woods scored with a cracking long-range strike.

Killeshin keeper Aoife O’Rourke had an excellent afternoon making some fine saves to keep the Thomastown attack at bay somewhat. Despite this Jennie Brennan would go on to complete her hat trick near the end and Joanna and Meghan Farrell would complete the scoring to reward the efforts of Alicia Minogue, Lisa Carney and hat trick hero Jennie Brennan.

Alana Waters, Lucy Gaffney and Aoife O’Rourke performed with distinction for Killeshin.

Hanover were on the front foot early in this encounter and were unlucky not to be ahead inside five minutes when Essmay Murphy fired inches wide. On twenty minutes she would make amends when Nicole Dowling’s quick free caught the Thomastown back line flat and Murphy ran thru to calmly slot home. As in recent weeks Hanover would usually kick on from this position but not Sunday and credit to Thomastown who took full advantage and were level just before the break with a fine volley from Eva Haynes.

Thomastown were much better in the second half and took the lead on 70 minutes when the impressive Meghan Farrell finished off a fine team move. Hanover were reduced to counterattack football but found themselves in decent positions and some decent deliveries from wide from Emma O’Regan and Leanne Tumelty weren’t finished. Thomastown sealed the points late on when Farrell rounded the on-rushing Christine Middleton and slotted home. Best for the victors were Aine Lennon, Meghan Farrell and Caoimhe Woods while Emma O’Regan, Essmay Murphy and Stephanie Kehoe did well for Harps.

Both teams started the second half well but Thomastown constantly put pressure on the Kilree goal at every opportunity. Sinead Whelan opened the scoring just ten minutes in when she got the ball in the middle of the park and walked through the Kilree defence to shoot past the Kilree keeper. Thomastown’s defence held firm as Kilree tried their best to pull one back. The two full backs were excellent. Ten minutes from time, Shauna Carroll got the ball and ran down the right wing, crossing into Eva Haynes who headed past the Kilree keeper. Kilree had a couple of chances of their own but were denied by the Thomastown defence.

Hynes scored her second when a shot rebounded back into her path from her original shot before Sinead Whelan struck for Thomastown third.

Thomastown started the second half off the brightest putting pressure on the Kilree goal and ten minutes in, Hynes had her hat-trick as her shot on target deflected off a Kilree defender into the net.
