An outstanding second quarter in which they ran in five goals saw Vale collect the points in the Swan.

The home side took an early lead when Phillip Brennan sent a great shot to the Vale net after a clearance from a corner fell to him on the edge of the box. Vale however recovered well from this set back and proceeded to boss the game before half time and were rewarded with five goals to lead 1-5 at the break.

Wolfhill staged a rally in the third quarter and goals from a well struck free kick by Billy Campion and a brace from Mark George reduced the score line to the minimum but the home side then conceded a soft goal and with it their chances of getting something from the tie. Best for Wolfhill were Adam Nicol-Waugh, Aidan Rowan Billy Campion and Phillip Brennan.

A strong Killeshin side won the points at home on Sunday.

The visitors helped by a strong breeze started well and Shane Whelan in the home side goal was forced into two fine saves both from Bernard Wheathley to keep the tie scoreless. Against the run of play Killeshin went ahead after 39 minutes when a deep cross from Jake Nolan was headed home by Michael McCartney for a 1-0 half time lead.

With the elements in the second half Killeshin turned the screw and after Wolfhill’s keeper made an excellent save they went 2-0 up with a second goal from Michael McCartney. A scrambled goal from Jake Nolan widened the gap after 73 minutes. Podge Kelly fired just over for Wolfhill near the end before Jake Nolan closed the scoring on 90 minutes.

Celtic Stars 2 - 0 Wolfhill Athletic

Celtic Stars 2

A very youthful Wolfhill started the new season hoping to repeat the heroics of last season where they were narrowly defeated in the Shield semi-final. Wolfhill were competitive throughout but had 17-year-old Adam Nichol-Laugh to thank on many occasions with an excellent display of goal keeping. Celtic took the lead on 20 minutes when they scored with a powerful shot from outside the area. Wolfhill almost equalized immediately when Billy Campion got clean through only to see his deft lob expertly saved by the onrushing keeper. Wolfhill were defending solidly but went two down after 30 minutes.

Wolfhill almost got back into the game on 50 minutes but Billy Campion couldn't score when well placed.

Wolfhill began to tire in the last quarter and Stars comfortably went through to round two.

Best for a hard working Wolfhill team were Adam Nichol Waugh in goals, Jim Leech and Mark George.
