Wolfhill Athletic 4 - 1 St Joseph's FC

Wolfhill Athletic 4

St Joseph’s 1

Wolfhill collected the points at home against a Joeys side who frustrated them for a long time with a stubborn defensive performance. There was little happening in the 1st half with Joeys containing the Wolfhill attacks easily without offering g a lot up front themselves. Scoreless at the break the Co Laois side soon made the breakthrough when Colin Campion flicked on a free kick to Billy Campion who centred for Paddy Hickey to finish from point blank range. Joeys equalised almost immediately, and the sides were level again in the 55th minute. 2 goals in the space of 4 minutes decided the destination of the points, Enda Butler sent a screamer to the visitors net on 67 minutes and then a Butler shot deflected past an excellent Joeys keeper off a defender in the 70th minute. Mark Brennan then got on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute and there was no way back for Joeys. Podge Kelly, Billy Campion and Enda Butler excelled for the winners.

Wolfhill Athletic 4

Nurney Villa B 0

Wolfhill were emphatic winners in the Swan over a misfiring Nurney side. The home side held the upper hand all through but the 1st half was a close enough contest as Nurney fought hard to contain their opponents and the half ended scoreless with chances at both ends not being converted. However, 5 minutes into the new half Michael Keogh caught Villa keeper off his line and a sweet lob put Wolfhill ahead. Nurney tried to respond but were always second best and the home side went further ahead on 63 minutes when Mark Brennan turned in a cross from close range. The third goal came from a Colin Campion penalty awarded after Philip Brennan was fouled in the area. Just to make sure of the win Colin Campion volleyed in a fourth goal near the close. PJ Rowan, Paddy Hickey and Michael Keogh impressed for the winners, with Eamon Dowling, Colin Townsend and Brian Carroll best for Nurney.

Nurney’s unbeaten run in Division Three came to a halt against a strong Wolfhill side.

It was end to end in the first half with little chances for either side. Adam Waugh in the visitors’ goal did have to make a smart save from a Philip Murphy shot on the half hour. Then just on half time the visitors launched a quick attack and Enda Butler broke the deadlock with a snap shot low to the net.

The third quarter was again evenly fought out with Nurney unable to penetrate through a solid Wolfhill defence and when a defender for Villa lost possession on the halfway line Colin Campion broke away to shoot a second for Wolfhill and the writing was on the wall for the home side. PJ Rowan put the visitors further ahead with a retaken penalty after he blasted the first kick high and wide and then Michael Keogh dispossessed a defender and laid the ball on to Enda Butler for a fourth goal, with Villas lone reply from Colin Townsend only a consolation late on.
