Round Tower Rovers v St. Joseph's FC
div 2 cup 17/04 11:00
Round Tower Rovers 3 - 2 St. Joseph's FC
This was another absolutely brilliant game of football between the two top teams unfolded in Timahoe on a rainy Sunday morning, but the weather certainly didn't dampen the passion and performance shown by both teams. The Saints started strong and immediately went on the attack and opened the scoring through their top goal scorer Tom Mitchell in the 5th minute when Padraig Webb drove at the heart of the Rovers defence and passed neatly for Mitchell to finish from 6 yards. The Joeys lead didn’t last long when Kieran Delaney stepped up to finish past the Joeys team from the edge of the box. The Saints pulled back in front when Fredo Eyong scored with a tidy finish at the back post, this time Mitchell becoming the provider for Eyong. A well deserved goal for Eyong, for his exceptional work rate and attacking play. Rovers equalised for a second time when a Cian Dowling Byrne shot was saved well by the keeper only to fall into the path of Enda Butler who rifled it home. Just before the break was when Rovers took the lead for the first time when a good ball from the left from Darren Byrne was send home by Ben O’Reilly, in what proved to be the match winner. The Saints began to dominate the second half by playing fantastic football for both their fans and the neutral to enjoy. Kieran Carey had a great chance to level for the Saints when he found himself with time and space in the middle of the box but his shot was blocked by a Rovers defender. The Saints tried valiantly to score their third goal of the game but for all their magnificent play they could not find the net and Rovers went through to the next round. A really fantastic game of football between both teams with Brandon Sheehan, Jack Murphy and Evan McGuire standing out for the Saints.

St. Joseph's FC 1 - 3 Lyons FC Kilkenny

Saint Joseph’s FC of Carlow exited Leinster Plate on Sunday at the hands of Lions FC, Kilkenny. Nevertheless, a great football game unfolded on a sunny morning in McArdle Cross, Tinryland. Lions took the lead when Saints defender Jack Murphy was caught out of position, leaving a massive gap for Lion's attackers to exploit. Saint Joseph's equalised through Craig Bowden on the 35th minute. After great forward work from Tom Mitchell and Kuba Brzezinski, the ball fell to Bowden in the box, and he made sure to rifle it home into the back of the net. This goal left the score 1-1 at halftime.

The Saints lost Brandon Sheehan through injury, which was a significant loss as he was the standout player in the game until that point.

Then, Saint Joseph's Cian Shannon was caught lacking in a defensive position, allowing the Lions striker to get around him and slot the ball home. This goal left the score at 2-1 with just under 20 minutes to play in the game. Unfortunately, the young Saints folded, and the Lions scored a third goal soon after to leave the final score at 3-1.

Outstanding for Saint Josephs on the day were Brandon Sheehan, Kuba Brzezinski and Luke Hutton.

St. Joseph's FC v Burrin Celtic
Div Two 20/03 14:00
St. Joseph's FC 2 - 1 Burrin Celtic

Saint Joseph's came away with all three points in the race for the Division Two title in a massive game at the top of the table in McArdle Cross, Tinryland. Two impressive footballing sides lined out to play what was to be a fantastic football game. After dropping points in their previous two games, Saint Joseph's understood the importance of this game and began to dominate the game's early stages. St. Joseph's opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when a lovely kick out from goalkeeper Daniel Donegan released Jake Snoddy down the right-hand side. Snoddy was the quickest to react to the ball and knocked it over the head of the onrushing Burrin keeper to make it 1-0 before halftime.

St. Joseph's extended their lead ten minutes into the second half from a corner. Tom Mitchell rose highest to meet the ball from the in-swinging corner delivered by Evan McGuire. This goal was Mitchell's 11th goal of the season. Burrin worked extremely hard to equalise, and this came through a cracking goal from well outside the penalty area that flew into the top corner. It was an unstoppable strike to make it 2-1 with not long left to go! Soon after, Burrin were awarded a penalty, but Daniel Donegan kept St. Joseph's 2-1 lead intact when he dove to his left of the goal to make a fine penalty save. Donegan was to be called upon twice more as Burrin increased their attacking threat, and he made an incredible save outstretched to his right and then another with his feet to keep the Burrin attack from equalising. St. Joseph's saw out the rest of the game and came away with all three points. It was a great game of football from two good footballing sides, which saw Joseph's move up to second place, and Burrin down to third place. Best for St. Joseph's FC - Tom Mitchell, Daniel Donegan and Jake Snoddy.

Baltinglass Town v St. Joseph's FC
Div Two 06/03 11:00
Baltinglass Town 1 - 0 St. Joseph's FC

A sunny morning in Parkmore Baltinglass saw the long-awaited clash between Baltinglass Town and St. Joseph's FC. Both teams started well with some excellent phases of play, although this was limited due to some pitch conditions. Nevertheless, Baltinglass pressed hard and battled in crucial areas to pin back the St. Josephs midfield. Gary Carroll for Baltinglass then scored the game's only goal after a long ball over the top fell to Carroll, who headed past the keeper. After that, both teams battled strongly with chances at both ends, leaving both goalkeepers to make big saves for their sides.

The second half started similar to the first, with ample chances from both sides just falling short. However, Saint Joseph's then began to dominate the second half and had Baltinglass defending for the majority of it. St. Joseph's Padraig Webb came the closest to scoring when his free kick struck the crossbar. Baltinglass ground out a result with brave defending as the game ended Baltinglass Town AFC 1-0 St Joseph's FC. A crucial 3 points dropped by St. Joseph’s in this close race to the Division 2 title. Best for Baltinglass - Gary Carroll, Brandon O’Rourke, and Shane Travers. Best for Saint Joseph's - Matthew Downey, Jack Lawlor, and Evan McGuire.

Vale Wanderers B 2 - 2 St. Joseph's FC

Vale Wanderers B 2

St. Joseph's FC 2

At the Superbowl in Leighlinbridge, Vale Wanderers started the game frantic and took the game to the top of the table St. Joseph's. Vale played some lovely football in the opening few minutes, and St. Joseph's struggled to match them. This type of play led Joseph's to give away several early fouls. It was through one of these fouls that Vale's PJ Haughney's free-kick from just inside his half eluded everyone and ended up in the back of the net to give Vale an early 1-0 lead.

The Saints responded, and the hard work and determination of the St. Joseph's players bundled the ball over the line for the equalising goal scored by Kit Gaffney. If both goals so far were fortunate, there was no element of luck in the next as a sweeping St. Joseph's move saw them grab the lead on the stroke of halftime. Jack Murphy and captain Padraig Webb linked in through midfield before Robert Timmons was released down the flank, crossing the ball for Kuba Brzezinski to fire home from inside the box. A lovely team goal to leave the score at 2-1 to St. Joseph's at halftime.

Vale again started the better of the two in the second half and equalised when a Darren O Keefe cross was fired home by Lee Conran. A proper end to end football game was played out, but neither team could find the winner after 90 minutes. Full-Time and the score finished Vale Wanderers B 2 - 2 St. Joseph's FC.

Best for Vale - Adam Dunne, PJ Haughney, and Keelan Brennan.

Best for Saint Josephs - Kuba Brzezinski, Robert Timmons, and Jake Snoddy.

Dorgan's strike sends St. Joseph's home and New Oak B into Second Round

New Oak Boys B 2

St. Joseph's FC 1 (AET):

An entertaining first-round cup tie played in a good spirit; New Oak started well and put Joseph's under pressure early. The New Oak team created early chances and were very unlucky when a Robert Purcell shot struck off the post. However, the longer the first half proceeded, the more St. Joseph's grew into the game, and they finished the first half on top with more prevalent play and possession. But still, this closely contested cup tie remained scoreless at the half-time break.

In the second half, the game opened up and Saint Joseph's made it 1-0 in the 50th minute when Daniel Donegan was released down the right-wing and crossed for Padraig Webb, who finished on his left foot. However, New Oak were not behind for long as in the 55th minute, a brilliant free kick from Ben Dorgan levelled the game after St. Joseph's gave away a needless foul within striking distance. 1-1. Both teams tried their best to win the game in regulation time, with St. Joseph's Evan McGuire coming close from a free kick, followed by a great chance created by Luca Hutton in the box. But it wasn't to be, and an extra thirty minutes was needed.

Neither team fancied the prospect of penalties which made for an exciting extra period with all-out attacks to try and win the game. It finished level at half-time despite some good chances for both sides, and it looked the same in the second half. The game seemed destined to be decided in a penalty shoot-out. That was until four minutes from full-time when a defence-splitting pass from the outstanding Jesse Clarke found Ben Dorgan in space, and he made no mistake to put New Oak into the next round. Best for New Oak B - Stephen Lacey, Ger Brennan and Jesse Clarke. Best for St. Joseph’s - Padraig Webb, Jack Murphy and Kuba Brzezinski.

Nurney 5

St Joseph’s 1

These two neighbours met for the second time in a week and after a scoreless draw last week it was Nurney who won the bragging rights and a spot in the semi-final next week away to Burrin Celtic. It was a bright start by Nurney who almost got their heads in front on 2 minutes when Cian Kelly shot just over the bar. Nurney continued to press but Josephs were dangerous on the counter, and they got the opener on 21 minutes when Conal McGuire scored from a free kick which went in off the post. Nurney didn't take long to respond and got a well-deserved equaliser on 23 minutes when Oisín Maloney scored from a free kick. Oisín Maloney was on the scoreboard again for Nurney a minute later when he converted a penalty.

Nurney continued to cause Josephs difficulties from set pieces and again conceded a 3rd when Oisín Maloney got his head on a corner ball on 34 minutes. St Joseph’s continued to be dangerous, but Nurney were in control for the rest of the half. Nurney started the 2nd in much the same way they started the 1st and Josephs tried to break through the Nurney defence but struggled with the final ball. Nurney continued to weather the Josephs attack and went close several times. Josephs had a great chance on 77 minutes, but the ever-reliable Thomas Bermingham kept them out and Darragh Fitzgerald got his 1st for the club when he struck home on 79 minutes from close range. Shane Kelly added to the tally when he converted on 81 minutes from play. It was a Great performance by Nurney against a team which has always caused them problems in the past. Nurney's best players were Oisín Maloney, Darragh Fitzgerald and Ben Smyth

Suncroft u20 1

The Saints stepped into their first Leinster competition at home to Leinster Senior League side Suncroft on a sunny Sunday afternoon, proudly representing the CDFL. Both teams displayed good footballing ability and it was Suncroft who opened the scoring with a brilliant team move. The Saints equalised through Fredo Eyong when he dribbled past 3 defenders before finding himself one on one with the goalkeeper and blasted the ball into the back of the net. 1-1 and game on. Half time arrived and the Saints regrouped. In the 55th minute, Jake Snoddy played a lovely through ball into the path of Tom Mitchell, who with a burst of pace went past the Suncroft defender and found himself one on one with a tight angle to finish - Mitchell cooly slid the ball past the keeper and the Saints were in front. The Saints remained compact and defended excellently with Brandon Sheehan making two fine tackles late in the game to deny the Suncroft attack. Best for the Saints were Jake Snoddy, Luke Hutton and Brandon Sheehan.

Nurney 1

St Joseph’s 1

Nurney went to St Joseph’s hoping to get the win that would have them finish ahead of Josephs in the table. Nurney started the game well and created chances with the aid of the wind. Nurney were unlucky not to take the lead on 11 minutes only being denied by some good goalkeeping. St Joseph’s got the opener against the run of play on 21 minutes with a goal from play. Nurney continued to press causing Joseph’s problems in mid field.

St Josephs continued to be dangerous and forced a great save from Thomas Bermingham to keep it at 1 nil. The half-finished 1 nil to Josephs. Nurney were against the wind now and started the half well and created some good opportunities to score. St Joseph’s absorbed the Nurney pressure well and created a great chance of their own on 70 minutes which required the Nurney keeper to be at his best to keep the score at the minimum. Nurney really on top now and got a well-deserved equaliser on 82 minutes when Ross Nolan hammered home the ball from inside the box. It was all Nurney for the remainder of the game but they couldn't get the elusive winner. Another great battle between these 2 teams who face each other next week in the cup quarter final. Best for Nurney were Evin Kearney, Thomas Bermingham, Luke Brennan and Ross Nolan.

St. Joseph's FC 2 - 1 Nurney Villa

An evenly contested game unfolded on Sunday afternoon in McArdle Cross. A young, talented, and upcoming St. Joseph's team had an excellent opportunity to put some ground between themselves and the chasing pack after Baltinglass Towns loss at home to New Oak that morning. St. Joseph's displayed impressive football for the large crowd in attendance to enjoy, with Luca Hutton almost opening the scoring on the 20th-minute mark, when his sweet left-footed strike from outside the box brought a fine save from the Nurney goalkeeper Chris Kearney. This was the chance of the half. The hardworking and willing partnership of Bowden and Eyong upfront for St. Joseph's were met by a persistent and well-organised Nurney defence who were going to be challenging to break down, leaving the score 0-0 at half-time.

Nurney Villa went ahead when a clearance from the St. Joseph's defence fell to Pakie Fleming, who volleyed a fine shot home to make it 1-0 to Nurney. However, this lead lasted just six minutes when St. Joseph's Padraig Webb was fouled on the edge of the box, and Luca Hutton stepped up to send a beautiful curling left-footed effort in off the post. 1-1 and game on. Nurney found themselves chances on goal, but after his outstanding performance last week, the Saints number one produced some fantastic saves when called upon. As the game began to reach the end, St. Joseph's overloaded the Nurney defence. After relentless attacking efforts, they found the all-important goal when Robert Timmons crossed for Daniel Donegan, who found himself with time at the back post to grab a last-minute winner and all three points for St. Joseph's. Best for St. Joseph's - Daniel Donegan, Padraig Webb, and Luca Hutton. Best for Nurney Villa - Andy O'Brien, Jamie McCabe, Mick Murphy and Pakie Fleming.

These two played out a very competitive scoreless draw. It was a great complete team performance from all 15 players from Tinryland. Up against a physically strong Ballymurphy team, St Josephs battled throughout the game and had the local team rattled at the end. Very commanding performance from the back line under the watchful eye of the excellent Sean Buggy in goal. All players played their part in this tough encounter and St Joseph's can look forward to finishing on a high to the end of their league campaign and are well capable of causing one or two Cup shocks in the coming weeks.
