St Joseph's FC v Burrin Celtic
Youths league 05/10 14:30
St Joseph's FC 1 - 8 Burrin Celtic

St Joseph’s 1

Burrin Celtic 8

For the second week in a row Burrin had another fast start going 0-3 up in the first twenty minutes with goals from Adam Nolan and a brace from Jamie Behan.

Joey’s did pull a goal back, when a corner wasn’t cleared by the Burrin defence and the ball dropped nicely for the Joey’s striker to tap home for 1-3. Burrin stepped up the pace and scored another four goals prior to the interval through Cormac Kinsella, Oisin Kelly – a penalty from Diego Dunne and Jamie Behan completed his hat-trick, giving Burrin an almost, unassailable half-time 1-7 lead.

Burrin started the second half the same as they finished the first, as within five minutes of the restart, Cian Brennan finished off a lovely through ball to make the score 1-8. That completed the scoring as the youthful Joey’s team, battled really hard to prevent Burrin adding any more goals to their tally and were successful, so there is something for them to take from their efforts, in the game.

Standing out for Burrin were Diego Dunne, Jamie Behan and Oisin Kelly, whilst it was a great team effort from Joey’s, who never gave up, they were just overwhelmed by Burrin’s first-half onslaught.

Killeshin FC 2 - 0 St Joseph's FC

Killeshin AFC 2

St Joseph’s 0

Killeshin began their campaign with a good win over St Joseph’s, in this entertaining game.

After a goalless first-half, Dylan Regan was to prove the difference between the two sides, with two well-taken second-half goals.

The first goal, came from a long Craig Doyle clearance, out of defence, which was flicked on by Jack Brennan and Dylan Regan latched on to the ball and he made no mistake from directly in front of goal, to give Killeshin a 1-0 lead.

The second goal was a wonderful, individual effort by Dylan Regan who beat two Joey’s defenders and then coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, to score a brace and ‘kill off’ the game at 2-0.

Best for Killeshin were Hubert Mazur, Lee Nolan, Jack Denn and Dylan Reglan, whilst it was a hard-working team performance by Joey’s.

St Joseph's FC 0 - 4 New Oak Boys

St Joseph’s 0

New Oak Boys 4

New Oak started brightly and found themselves 0-1 up early on thanks to a wonderful header from Boni Milinganyo and they were dominating the play but Joey’s were looking dangerous, on the break and could have been level at the interval but they spurned the few chances they created and it was 0-1 at the break.

Early in the second half a tremendous strike from David Ujadugle from all of twenty-five yards put New Oak 0-2 up and shortly afterwards man of the match Lorcan Canavan made a superb solo run before finishing from outside the box to make it 0-3 and New Oak were cruising. New Oak’s last goal came from good link-up play between David Ujadugle and Lwazi Ndolvu and he finished well to give New Oak a comprehensive 0-4 victory.

It was a good overall team performance from Joey’s but they were overwhelmed by a terrific team performance by New Oak for whom Lorcan Canavan was absolutely outstanding.

On eight minutes Tom Mitchell chipped the keeper to open the scoring. Joey’s second of the day came from a corner that Mitchell cleanly headed into the net. They added a third on 20 minutes when Sam Byrne took the ball around the keeper to leave them three up at the break.

Joey’s controlled the majority of the second half and added a fourth with a free kick from Evan McGuire.

Slaney Rovers B 4 - 1 St Joseph's FC

St. Joseph’s 1

Slaney continued their good start to the season, beating the young St. Joseph’s side.

Joey’s started strong and immediately put the home team on the defensive. Slaney were fast on the counter and in a game were the took all their chances opened the scoring through Aaron Smith from long range. Soon after, they added a second, an in-swinging corner from Kyle Byrne to the back post, for Ethan Smith to out jump all and head home on 25 minutes. Joey’s kept pressing and were rewarded just before half time when Sam Byrne slotted one home to leave it 2-1 at the break.

The second half was much the same as the first, with both teams having dominant periods. But it was the home team who took advantage. Within a minute of the restart an alert Kyle Byrne intercepted a back pass to slot home for 3-1 and a sweet finish from Clive Byrne rounded off the scoring at 4-1. All in all, a well-matched game in which the final score line was not a fair reflection on two teams that battled it out toe to toe with very little between them.

Played well for Slaney Jake Elliot, Padhraic Bolger and Kyle Lawlor.

Last season’s runners up started the season in fashion against a young Joeys side.

Both teams were up for this from the start. The visitors opened the scoring after ten minutes via John O’Neill. Joeys quickly equalised when a through ball found Tom Mitchell outside the box and he calmly slotted into the back of the net. In an end to end game with chances created on both sides the visitors secured another, Dawid Radoscki scoring with a tidy finish at the back post.

An exciting start to the second half saw Joeys break up the wing and a cross from Dylan McDermott was smashed into the net with a header from Sam Byrne to equalise for a second time. This was short lived and the visitors scored two more through Lord Afrifa.

Baltinglass Town v St Joseph's FC
Shield 08/09 11:00
Baltinglass Town 5 - 3 St Joseph's FC

Baltinglass Town 5

St. Joseph’s 3

St Joseph’s Senior team travelled to Baltinglass for the first round of the Shield Cup.

This was the first outing for the majority of these players in a senior competition outside of Youths football. Despite a nervous start by Joeys it was nip and tuck in the middle of the field with both sides playing attacking football. With chances created at both ends, it was the home team who were to capitalise first. Keeping their heads Joeys started to settle and in the 29th minute were awarded a free kick just outside the box, which was calmly converted by Evan McGuire to level the game. A much-needed confidence booster for the visitors saw them continue to press and a cross by Dylan McDermott into the home team’s box was deflected into the net leave Joeys 2-1 up at half time.

Baltinglass started strongly in the second half and it wasn’t long till they found the equaliser. The home team started to take control of the game, but on a counter-attack Kit Gaffney found Dylan McDermott, who received the ball inside the box, and he slotted it into the bottom left to put the visitors back on top. Joeys, who fought hard for 15 minutes to hold onto this lead were soon broken down and the game was level once again. With tired legs Joeys were under constant pressure for the last 15 minutes and eventually the experience of the home team proved too much and they added two more to their tally leaving the final score 5-3.

A great debut for this young team and a great performance by all.
