St Joseph's FC v Burrin Celtic
Div Two 08/03 14:00
St Joseph's FC 5 - 1 Burrin Celtic

St Joseph’s 5

Burrin Celtic 1

St Joseph’s started well and dominated the play right from the start but failed to convert their chances with Burrin defending well. Burrin were reduced to ten men and Joeys awarded a penalty thirty minutes in when a defender handled the ball but Caoimhin Treacy’s effort struck the post and went wide. Joeys piled on the pressure but fine saves by the Burrin keeper denied them on several occasions, they finally made the breakthrough just before half time when Padraig Webb was rewarded for his persistence.

Kit Gaffney doubled their lead five minutes into the second half after some good play. Three minutes later Burrin made it two one with a well converted penalty after a foul by the keeper. Joeys got their third on the hour mark when Caoimhin Treacy netted after a long clearance. Daniel Donegan thought he’d made it four five minutes later with a fine header but he was deemed offside. Padraig Webb capped a man of the match performance with his second and Joey’s fourth with twenty minutes left and Tom Mitchell wrapped up the scoring five minutes later with a brilliant header.

Crettyard United v Burrin Celtic
Youths league 22/02 14:30
Crettyard United 3 - 0 Burrin Celtic

Crettyard United 3

Burrin Celtic 0

In very wet and blustery conditions, second-placed Crettyard consolidated their position at the top of the Division with a really comfortable 3-0 victory over mid-table Burrin.

All the goals came in the first half as Burrin had no answer to the speedy and tricky Crettyard attackers their first coming from the boot of Ian Shanahan with a tidy finish around the Burrin keeper for 1-0. Shanahan turned provider for their second as he magnificently set up Tobi Alaoye who finished really well for 2-0 and Crettyard were cruising. On a rare Burrin attack they looked certain to score but Crettyard’s keeper Josh Kelly made a great save and then another from the rebound to keep out Burrin. Luke Phillips completed the scoring at 3-0 when he coolly despatched a penalty into the net and that was the score as half-time came.

In the second half the pitch cut up badly and that made it very difficult to play any kind of football it was really just one hard slog for all the players and it ended with a 3-0 score line.

Standing out for Crettyard were Luke Phillips, Shane Buggy, Victor Oladapo and Dara Kelly, whilst it was a good hard-working team performance from Burrin.

Parkville United v Burrin Celtic
Youths league 08/02 14:30
Parkville United 6 - 1 Burrin Celtic

Parkville United 6

Burrin Celtic 1

Parkville took on a depleted Burrin side who could only muster nine men.

They were up against it right from the kick-off but credit to Burrin they battled hard and it took Parkville until seventeen minutes before they scored their first goal which came the boot of the prolific Brian Byrne for 1-0. Burrin equalised just five minutes later, when a ball ‘over the top’ caught out the Parkville defence and it was latched on to by Dan Smyth, who coolly scored to make it 1-1. Parkville’s superior numbers saw them dominate possession and they went on to score four more goals before half-time through a brace from Brian Byrne who completed his hat-trick and one apiece from Luke Byrne and Eoghan Cannon making it 5-1 at the interval.

Brian Byrne went on to score his fourth in the second half and that completed the scoring at 6-1 as Burrin put in a fine defensive team effort to prevent Parkville adding to their tally in what was a heroic display from them for which they deserve much credit.

Hanover Harps v Burrin Celtic
26/01 11:00
Hanover Harps 6 - 1 Burrin Celtic

Hanover Harps 6

Burrin Celtic 1

Hanover dominated from the start and should have scored early on through Johnny Waters and Mark Kelly who both missed good chances. They were punished when Connor Quinn scored on 15 minutes after good work by Liam Brennan. Hanover woke up and responded quickly when Mark Kelly scored a 20-minute hat trick to give the hosts a 3-1 lead at the break.

It was all one-way traffic in the second half with goals from Jonathan Waters, Shane Kelly and the ever-young Patrick Dowling scoring a 25-yard belter in the top corner to leave the Premier side easy winners and setting up a home semi-final against St Pat’s Boys.

Best for Hanover were Aaron Kinsella, Dylan Walsh, Aaron Wynne and Mark Kelly. Best for Burrin were Jimmy Nolan, Johnny Nolan and Ross Nolan.

Burrin Celtic v Killeshin FC
Youths league 25/01 14:30
Burrin Celtic 3 - 2 Killeshin FC

Burrin Celtic 3

Killeshin FC 2

For the first thirty minutes of this game neither team produced any clear-cut chances with Killeshin being the more dominant, but they didn’t take advantage of their dominance.

Killeshin’s Evan Treacy worked hard on the left wing, providing a number of fine crosses into Burrin’s penalty area, but none were converted. That all changed on 33 minutes, when Burrin made Killeshin pay for their lack of finishing, as a fine team move ended up with Adam Nolan breaking the deadlock when he shot home for a 1-0 score line. On thirty minutes an unstoppable shot from all of 30 yards by Killeshin’s Jack Brennan levelled the scores at 1-1 and that was the score at the interval.

Burrin got off to a great start in the second half as Dan Smyth beautifully lobbed the Killeshin keeper to put them into a 2-1 lead and fifteen minutes later Burrin scored again after some great link-up play saw Scott Treacy finish well to make it 3-1. Daniel Core got Killeshin’s second, with only twenty minutes to go to make the score 3-2 and whilst they pushed hard until the end, some strong defending by Burrin kept them out. Both teams put in great performances, but Burrin just about edged it and deserved their 3-2 victory.

It was an overall team effort from Burrin and standing out for Killeshin were Kealum Hand, Lee Nolan and Evan Tracey.

Lfa U18 Cup 18/01 14:15
Burrin Celtic 2 - 3 Newbridge town u17

Burrin Celtic 2

Newbridge Town 3

Newbridge started this game much the better moving the ball around really well and they took a 0 -1 lead on eighteen minutes through a fine solo effort by Kieran Oitegu and it was well deserved.

Burrin’s heads didn’t drop and they kept battling and equalised on the 30-minute mark after a lovely link-up between Dan Smyth and Adam Nolan with Nolan finishing well as the Newbridge keeper advanced to make it 1-1. Just five minutes later Newbridge restored their lead to 1-2 when Joe Mills finished well from just inside the box and that was the score at half-time.

Newbridge started the second half with real purpose and within five minutes they had their third goal when Sean Donoghue was found unmarked at the back post and he easily converted to make the score 1-3. Still Burrin didn’t give up and stayed battling and creating chances but they couldn’t convert any of them however with only 15 minutes to go Jamie Behan scored to take Burrin to within one goal of Newbridge at 2-3. Burrin kept pressing right until the final whistle trying to get that elusive equaliser but it wasn’t to be as Newbridge go forward to the next round which on balance, they deserve to with that narrow 2-3 victory.

It was a well-drilled team performance from Newbridge, whilst for Burrin Eamonn Lawlor, Scott Treacy and Eoin Kavanagh stood out and impressed.

Vale Wanderers B v Burrin Celtic
Div Two 12/01 11:00
Vale Wanderers B 2 - 3 Burrin Celtic

Vale Wanderers 2

Burrin Celtic 3

Burrin edged this six-pointer claiming the win.

Vale started slow and found themselves behind after just two minutes when some good passing by Burrin allowed them to play Michael O’Leary through and he slipped the ball past the keeper. Vale responded well and after 15 minutes Sean Taylor played Conor Byrne in and he levelled from close range. It took a deflection to produce the next goal, the Vale defender cleared the ball but it struck the back of Conor Quinn and the ball looped into the corner of the Vale net. Conor Byrne scored again from a Geoffrey Doran pass.

Vale made some changes at half time and they seemed to work as they dominated the second half but they failed to convert a number of fine chances with the Burrin keeper in fine form. With only minutes left in the match, Burrin would get another stroke of luck, a long ball forward was met with a header from a Vale defender. However, it hit the knee of another player and fell lovely into the path of O’Leary who raced through to place the ball past the keeper and give Burrin all three points.

Best for Vale on a disappointing afternoon were Pat Meaney, Ceilum Darcy and Conor

Burrin Celtic v Round Tower Rovers
Div Two 05/01 11:00
Burrin Celtic 3 - 1 Round Tower Rovers

Burrin Celtic 3

Round Tower Rovers 1

The first half was evenly matched with both sides having chances.

Burrin went one up with 25 minutes gone through a long effort from Jonathan Lalor that put off the keeper and defence for the away side. A few minutes later, Michael O’Leary had a great chance outside the box and spotted the keeper off his line by trying a long range shot over the keeper’s head but just going over the bar. Round Tower Rovers then started to trouble the home side and their goal came from some good play with Craig Doyle making two great saves but the third shot was the one that counted. Rovers equalised just before half time when Alex Renehan pounced on a ball in the box and riffled it into the bottom corner.

The second half was very even until 75 minutes when Burrin got their lead from an O’Leary cross which John Kinsella got on the end of it and slid in to make it 2-1. Burrin applied the pressure and got the third with a well taken goal from Liam McGuill. A hard-fought game that Burrin just edged.

New Oak Boys v Burrin Celtic
Youths league 04/01 14:30
New Oak Boys 3 - 1 Burrin Celtic

New Oak Boys 3

Burrin Celtic 1

There was a quick start to the game from both teams but it was Burrin who struck the first blow on ten minutes through Adam Nolan as he took advantage of a lack of concentration by the New Oak defenders for a 0-1 lead.

Burrin had numerous opportunities to increase their lead but they couldn’t find a way past Shaun Geoghegan in the New Oak goal who was in excellent form making save after save to thwart the visitors. New Oak grew into the game and on 31 minutes they equalised through a long-range strike by Daniel Hayden to make it 1-1 and that was the score at the interval.

New Oak came out of the traps early in the second half and they went 2-1 up as Brandon Doyle rounded the Burrin keeper and finished into an empty net. This reverse spurred on Burrin and they applied a lot of pressure to New Oak’s defenders especially from wide areas but they couldn’t break down a strong and dogged new Oak defence. With 25 minutes to go New Oak lost Brandon Doyle to a red card and this decision enabled Burrin to further increase the pressure on New Oak but despite their extra man they were unable to break them down. A bit of good fortune came New Oak’s way as a Daniel Hayden shot was deflected into the Burrin net to give Daniel his brace and New Oak a decisive and match-winning 3-1 lead. Burrin piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes but a very courageous performance from this young New Oak team enabled them to see out the game with some backs to the wall defending and come out as 3-1 victors.

Best for New Oak were Daniel Hayden, Cian Kelly, Boni, Shaun Geoghegan and Jordan O’Brien whilst standing out for Burrin were Jake Somers, Adam Nolan and Scott Treacy.

Mill Celtic 0 - 1 Burrin Celtic

Mill Celtic 0

Burrin Celtic 1

Mill Celtic crashed out of the Shield when they were beaten by Division Two side Burrin Celtic by the solitary goal.

The visitors started the game the stronger team and played the better football. They were awarded a penalty on 10 minutes when David Wilson was fouled in the box. Liam Brennan stepped up and slotted the spot kick home. The Ballytore side came to terms with this setback but found Craig Doyle in the Burrin goal impossible to beat. The home side dominated the second half and peppered the Burrin goal hitting the post a number of times. Even when Doyle was beaten Eoin Smithers cleared off the line on 85 minutes to see them through to the next round.

Outstanding for the winners were man of the match Donnacha Murphy, Craig Doyle and Eoin Smithers. Best for Mill on the day were Harry Kirwan, Eoin O’Neill, and Corey Maher.

Burrin Celtic 6 - 0 New Oak Boys

Burrin Celtic 6

New Oak Boys 0

It was an even start to this game as both teams got the ball down and attempted to play good football in a game that was proving to be tricky in windy conditions.

Burrin scored for 1-0 on thirteen minutes as Adam Nolan scored with a fine finish following a cross from Ben Ward and Nolan scored another five minutes later for his brace as Burrin doubled their lead to 2-0. A brace from Nolan’s fellow-striker Dan Smyth made the score 4-0 at the interval and it didn’t seem if New Oak could get back into the game with that substantial deficit.

New Oak had wind advantage in the second half as they deployed long-ball tactics and they were getting some joy out wide but they just couldn’t find a way through the strong Burrin defence. However, a quick counterattack by Burrin saw Oisin Kelly score to make it 5-0 and the scoring was completed when Cian Byrne scored from the spot to make the final score 6-0 in what was a dominating performance by Burrin.

Standing out for Burrin were Lorcan Doyle, Adam Nolan and Dan Smyth, whilst best for an out of sorts New Oak team were Brandon Doyle, Bonita Milinganyo, Dan Smyth and Jordan O’Brien who had a fine game at left-back.

A second goal quickly followed when Colm O’Connor produced a fine cross for Ethan Smith to smash home for 2-0 at the break.

Burrin Celtic 8

Bagenalstown AFC 2

Bagenalstown got off to a great start as after only twelve minutes Dylan Hand scored to make it 0-1 after some sloppy Burrin defending. Burrin equalised on twenty minutes when a fine Ben Ward cross was well met by Stephen Roche to make it 1-1. Bagenalstown scored again before the interval when Kyle O’Neill fired home with an excellent shot from the edge of the penalty area to make it 1-2 and that was the score at half-time and was well deserved by Bagenalstown.

That was to change as the second half was all Burrin from start to finish as Burrin scored seven goals without reply with goals coming from a brace apiece from Dan Smyth and Jamie Behan and one each from Adam Nolan Adam Connolly and Dara O’Donoghue to give Burrin an emphatic 8-2 victory. Bagenalstown were just overwhelmed by Burrin’s second-half onslaught and just had no answer to it which was in marked contrast to the first half when they were decidedly on top.

Nurney Villa 0 - 2 Burrin Celtic

Nurney Villa 0

Burrin Celtic 2

Burrin claimed a big win over bottom of the table Nurney to jump up the table.

Nurney started the stronger team playing good football and dominating the middle of the field for the first 20 minutes. Craig Doyle played well in the goal and saved the away side a few times. Burrin got their first goal with half an hour gone with a well worked goal from a free kick, with Conor Quinn putting a great ball across the box and Michael O’Leary finishing well after Nurney failed to clear twice. Burrin then dominated having more chances with a dead ball breaking to Andrew Skelly and a fantastic finish outside the box.

The second half was much the same as the first with chances in both halves of the pitch and some good football being played by both sides but no goals in the second half. The best chance of the game fell to Val Fleming who fired over.

Best for Nurney Sean McDermott, Mick Murphy and Jack Rowan. Best for Burrin were Andrew Skelly, Ryan Brady, Aaron Wynne, John Kinsella.

Last week, we reported that the Nurney manager had been sent off late in the game based on information provided. However, Nurney wish to clarify that it wasn’t actually the manager who got sent off but a player. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Burrin Celtic 3

Slaney Rovers 0

Slaney’s bad away record continued on Sunday as the Ballon side won comfortably.

Both teams played well in the first 15 minutes with Slaney having more chances on the Burrin keeper Craig Doyle through Kyle and Adam Byrne. With the pitch in poor condition, passes went astray from both sides, making it difficult to play. Both sides keepers pulled off some good saves but Burrin went ahead with a well-placed goal from Conor Quinn after 35 minutes.

The half time team talk worked for the second half for the home side with Burrin playing the better football and having more chances on the away keeper. Burrin got their second through Conor Quinn and Liam McGuill finished the scoring with a well-placed header near the end.

Best players for Burrin: Conor Quinn, Adam Deacon, Darragh Quinn, Craig Doyle. Conor Forde, Ethan Smith and Corey Murphy tried hard for the Slaneysiders.

League leaders St Pat’s continued their unbeaten start to the season with a good win on Sunday afternoon in the Meadows.

A great opening half by both sides seen the visitor’s Burrin go 1-0 up after just five minutes when Liam Brennan scored. John O’Neill grabbed his first of the day just before the half an hour point to get the home team back on level terms. LFA Cup 25/10 20:00
Trinity Donaghmede 3 - 0 Burrin Celtic

Trinity Donaghmeade AFC 3 – 0 Burrin Celtic AFC.

Both teams were quickly into their stride and they both pressing to gain the advantage under lights on Friday night. Both teams went close in the early stages but couldn’t convert. In general, the game was played at a really fast pace, with great defending from both teams. However, on the half-hour mark Trinity broke and from out wide right the ball was passed into Trinity’s striker and he hit a deflected shot which deceived Craig Doyle and the ball ended up in the net to give Trinity a slender 1-0 lead. Trinity’s winger broke Burrin’s‘offside trap’ and finished well to give Trinity a comfortable 2-0 lead, that they took into half-time. Burrin came out, in the second-half, with a lot more determination and they got into the game a lot more, as they put the Trinity defence under more pressure and Eli Byrne, broke down Trinity’s left, but his fantastic shot went just wide and the chance went abegging. Liam Brennan and Darragh Quinn went close with efforts too. Whilst time was running out, Burrin looked as if they could still get back into the game. However, with just five minutes to go, Trinity sealed their win with another goal to make it 3-0, as a ‘cut-back’ to an on-rushing midfielder, was easily slotted home. It was a very good team performance from Trinity, who were more clinical than Burrin. Standing out for Burrin were Dave Wilson, Darragh Quinn and Eli Byrne.
