Slaney advanced to the next round of the Carlow cup at the expense of fellow Division One opponents St. Anne’s in Rathvilly on Sunday.

The visitors had two great chances to take the lead before Daniel O`Brien finished off a pin point cross from Stephen Farrell on 35 minutes to lead at the break.

With the strong wind at their backs in the second-half the home side dominated proceedings. Aaron Broughall headed home a cross from Michael Foley on the right wing on 49 minutes. The Ballylinan side struggled in the wintery conditions and failed to penetrate the Rovers defence. Two late close-range finishes from Broughall and Dominic Byrne rewarded the efforts of Stephen Farrell, Seanie Furlong and Paul Curran.

Baltinglass Town 2

St. Anne’s got the better of Baltinglass on a cold morning in Ballylinan on Sunday.

The home side started strong but the Balto defence stood firm. The Wicklow side should have taken the lead as Declan Jones went close on a couple of occasions. However, it was the Saints Andy McEvoy who got his side off the mark on 20 minutes when he slotted home a fine through ball from Emmet Doyle. The Laois side doubled their advantage when Gary Walsh headed home on 40 minutes to give the Saints a two-goal half time lead.

The visitors started the better in the second half and after exerting a bit of pressure Declan Jones was finally rewarded with a goal for his efforts. Anne’s regained their two-goal advantage when Andy McEvoy sent pile driver to the net on 75 minutes. Back came Baltinglass again and from a Thierry Boulton free kick James Gahan headed home to reduce the deficit again. They tried hard to find an equaliser, but the Saints held out for a valuable three points.

Outstanding for the winners were Andy McEvoy, Eric Kenna and Gary Walsh while for Balto James Gahan, Declan Jones and Paddy Kelly were players of note.

St Anne's FC v Castle Rangers

St Anne's FC 1 - 1 Castle Rangers

St Anne’s 1

Castle Rangers 1

An entertaining game Sunday morning in Ballylinan under blustery wind conditions. St Anne's started strong and had the early chances, but the Rangers defence held firm. St Anne's hard work was eventually rewarded on 15 minutes with a free kick in a dangerous position after Kevin Farrell was brought down just outside the Rangers box. St Anne's Jack Hickey stepped up to take the free kick and buried the ball into the back of the Rangers net. Instead of St Anne’s capitalizing on this goal and continuing the pressure, it was Castle Rangers who now dictated the game. Straight from the kick off Danny O’Boyle saw his shot rebound from the crossbar. After this St Anne's we're now forced to defend a wave of Rangers attacks with St Anne’s Gary Walsh and Shane Moore making some fine tackles. An error by the St Anne’s defence gave away a penalty to Castle Rangers. Ciallin Canning stepped up and scored past St Anne's goal keeper Liam O’Dea. The score was level in the 35th minute and remained so until half time. There was some good play from both teams in the second half with the ball moving from one end of the pitch to the other. Castle Rangers hit the post in the 65th min through Eddie Davis but couldn’t find the net. The Saints keeper, Liam O’Dea was forced to make a series of good saves. St Anne’s had their own half chances but, in the end, there was no more goals in the second half and a draw was a fair result for both teams.

Best for Anne’s were Liam O’Dea, Gary Walsh and Shane Moore.

Best for Rangers Alan Butler, Roy Pearson and Cian Connolly
