Mill Celtic 3

Mill made the long journey to Ballymurphy a rewarding one with this good win on Sunday.

The visitors started the brighter and went ahead through Catherine Dempsey after a good through ball from Nicole Heeney Byrne. The Kildare side had chances to extend their lead but couldn’t find a way past the Ballymurphy keeper.

The second half was even enough and the home side almost levelled matters on 20 minutes but Rachel Fenin pulled off a fine save in the Mill goals. The winner dominated the final few minutes and sealed victory with two late goals.

Best on the day for Mill were Laura Fenin, Mag Nolan and Chloe Foy.

Mill Celtic 3 - 1 Castle Rangers

Mill Celtic 3

Castle Rangers 1

Mill Celtic made their final home game of the season a winning one with this victory over the Carlow town side.

The early exchanges were quite tense with neither side threatening. The visitors broke the deadlock with a long ball over the top by Gary Murphy which allowed Martin to race in behind and lob over the advancing Harry Kirwan. The home side created a number of chances through Dylan Wynne, Brian Malone and Shane Molloy but they could find the net with their respective efforts.

The second half began with Mill looking like a team on a mission and their fast start was rewarded after 52 minutes when a long raking pass from Gary Lambe found Daniel Mackey who in turned played through Wynne to slot home the equaliser. With the Mill back four being resolute at the back the same two players combined for Wynne to grab his second with a superb finish on 64 minutes. Daniel O’Boyle was denied by a great save by Kirwan that kept the home side in command and the game was wrapped up with ten minutes to go when Andrew Baldwin grabbed a deserved goal after the Rangers keeper spilled a Brian Mackey free kick.

Best for Mill on the day were Gary Lambe, Brian Malone and Dylan Wynne. For Castle Cian Connolly, Mick McGrath and Alan Butler stood out.

Mill Celtic 4 - 1 Killeshin FC

Mill Celtic 4

Killeshin FC 1

Mill started the game with the wind in their backs and played some lovely football in the opening exchanges.

It took until the half hour to break the deadlock when a Deirbhle Byrne corner caused panic in the Killeshin box and eventually Rachael Fennin slotted home from close range. The second came shortly after with good work from Pam and Megan Grufferty slipped in Nicole Heaney and her first time cross found Mag Nolan at the back post.

The second half was evenly contested until 20 minutes from time when Catherine Dempsey broke the offside trap and chipped the advancing keeper. Dempsey would soon have her second when she tapped home a Fennin cross. Killeshin got a deserved consolation late on when Aoife O’Rourke found the net to reward the efforts of Sophia Hade and Fiona Culleton while Donna Corcoran, Shona Fagan, Ash Woods and Emma Dunne impressed for the winners.

Crettyard United B 2 - 2 Mill Celtic

Crettyard United 2

Mill Celtic 2

A share of the points was a fair result after this entertaining encounter in Crettyard on Sunday.

The visitors dominated the majority of the first half possession but failed to capitalise in front of goal. They were hit with a sucker punch when the home side broke up field and Shane Buggy rounded the keeper to put the Laois side ahead at the break.

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first with the Kildare side creating countless opportunities but again it was Crettyard who doubled their lead when Shane Buggy grabbed his second goal to make it 2-0. The Ballitore side got back into the game when Aaron Kennedy fired home from the penalty spot on 79 minutes after David Howe was fouled. Their never say die attitude was rewarded when Andrew Baldwin powered home a header from a Brian Malone cross in the last ten minutes.

Best for Crettyard were Shane Buggy, James Sherwood and Jimmy Dunne. Outstanding for Mill in a great team performance were Andrew Baldwin, Shane Molloy, and Aaron Kennedy.

Hanover Harps v Mill Celtic
23/02 14:00
Hanover Harps 0 - 0 Mill Celtic

Hanover Harps 0

Mill Celtic 0

A top of the table clash played in perfect conditions produced a game of few chances as neither team gave an inch throughout the 90 minutes.

With Hanover missing so many influential players a long ball game exploiting the pace of Steph Kehoe, Lauren McGrath and Rachael Whelan would prove to be their best outlet and this nearly paid dividends on 28 minutes when Kelly Nolan found Kehoe and her square ball just eluded Whelan at the back post.

Mill started the second half the better and pressured the Hanover penalty area but Kelly Nolan and Marie Hynes stood firm. On 70 minutes Hanover probably should have broken the deadlock when Rachael Whelan headed Steph Kehoe’s corner straight at the Mill keeper from six yards. Two minutes later a mazy Deirbhle Byrne run resulted in a penalty being awarded to Mill but the usually reliable Catherine Dempsey blazed over. Mill should have collected the three points late on when Dempsey’s cross was somehow missed at the back post by Megan Grufferty.

Best for Mill were Chloe Foy, Muireann Fagan and Laura Fennin while Becky Walsh, Andrea Jeaney, Marie Hynes and the impressive Kelly Nolan impressed for Harps.

Parkville United B 0 - 4 Mill Celtic

Parkville United 0

Mill Celtic 4

Mill Celtic produced their best display of the season to easily overcome Parkville in Tullow on Sunday.

The home side started well and TJ Kavanagh put Brian Byrne through on goal but the Mill keeper made a fine save. The visitors settled and opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Daniel Mackey put in Euan Cullen who rounded the keeper and slotted home. At the other end Sean Maher and Brian Byrne combined to set up David Orbinski but his effort was turned around the post for a corner. Celtic were more clinical when Fionn O’Rourke found Eoin O’Neill and he doubled their lead before the break.

Parkville started the second half the better with Matt Decaux dominating midfield. Brian Byrne and David Orbinski forced a couple of good saves from impressive Mill keeper Harry Kirwan. The Kildare side made the game save on 58 minutes when Eoin O’Neill raced onto a through ball from Brian Malone and chipped the onrushing Parkville goalkeeper. TJ Kavanagh saw his well struck shot just wide on 70 minutes and as they pushed on Mill capitalised on the counter and Malone scored his second to seal victory.

Best for Mill on the day were Aaron Dunne, Eoin O’Neill and Fionn O’Rourke. Hard working for Parkville were Henry Hegarty, Matt Decaux and Michael Brown.

Thomastown United 0 - 1 Mill Celtic

Thomastown 0

Mill Celtic 1

Two of the big three would go toe to toe in this quarter final in Kilkenny on Sunday afternoon.

Thomastown started much the brighter and had some early opportunities when Rachael Fennin was forced into a fine save from a Jenny Brennan header, then Eva Haynes played in Sarah Barcoe who unusually fired over. Megan Grufferty has Mill’s best chance in the opening half but she fired straight at the keeper.

The second half was a much more even contest with chances at a premium. Jenny Brennan had her free kick tipped over late on but the only goal came on 91 minutes when Triona Duggan broke the offside trap and her first time cross found Nicole Heaney who volleyed home.

A great team performance from both sides throughout this tight encounter.

On a frosty Sunday morning Mill Celtic entertained high-flying Premier Division side Crettyard in Ballitore.

The visitors were resting a number of players ahead of their Leinster Senior Cup showdown next weekend while Mill to their immense credit matched their opponents for the majority of the game. Crettyard took the lead when Colin Osborne and Mark Lyons combined well to set up Danny Doyle to fire home on 15 minutes. The home side battled hard throughout and on any another day the good attacking play of Aaron Kennedy, Eoin O’Neill and Jason McHugh may have been rewarded on the scoreboard. The Laois side doubled their lead when Gearoid Cuddihy crossed for Osborne to head home on 30 minutes for a 2-0 interval lead.

Mill continued to give everything they could to make things difficult for their visitors but Crettyard made it 3-0 in the dying minutes when Even Phillips’ well delivered corner was pounced on by the returning Aaron Morris to see them through to the last eight.

Outstanding for the winners were Gearoid Cuddihy, Craig Comerford and Mark Lyons while Jason McHugh, Andrew Baldwin and Brian Malone were standout players for Mill.

Impressive for the winners were Deirbhile Byrne, Chloe Foy and Natasha Tannion while Maggie Doogue, Kate McDonald and Izzy Humphrey tried hard for Fiaccs.

Mill Celtic entertained Vale this morning looking to stop their recent slump in form but it was not to be.

In a thrilling encounter the visitors went in front on ten minutes through Willie Kavanagh. The home side equalised through Andrew Baldwin to leave the sides all square at the break.

The Leighlinbridge side stepped it a gear in the second half and Jack Treacy converted an Andrew Townsend corner. Craig Doyle made it 3-1 following a Willie Kavanagh assist. But back came Celtic and Euan Cullen reduced the deficit. Sean Smithers dashed any hopes of a Mill revival however when he finished from close range to secure the points.

It was a brilliant all-round team performance by Vale and best for Mill were Corey Maher, Jason McHugh and Andrew Baldwin.

Mill bounced back from being one nil down at the break to grab a share of the points in this evenly contested match in Ballytore on Sunday.

The visitors should have taken the lead after 20 minutes but Brian O’Rourke failed to connect properly from ten yards. The Graiguecullen side were rewarded for their efforts when Ross Hennessy controlled the ball and smashed an unstoppable half volley from 30 yards to give Fiacc’s the lead. James Fahey could have equalised for the home side but his screamer struck the crossbar.

The Ballytore side started the second half very strong with chances by Jason McHugh, Euan Cullen and James Fahey going close and only for some excellent last ditch defending from Fiacc’s Wayne Humphries and Shane Aylward they were kept out. Saints should have doubled their lead but Matthew Power saw his penalty saved by the Corey Maher in the Mill goal. Within a couple of minutes, the home side equalised when Eoin O’Neill stabbed the ball home following good work by sub Fionn O’Rourke. It was end to end for the last 15 but neither team could find the winner.

Players of note for Mill were James Fahey, Eoin O’Neill, Corey Maher and Brian Malone. Best for Fiacc’s in a good battling performance were Patrick Scully, Mícheál Loughman and Brian O’Rourke.

Mill Celtic crashed out of the Shield when they were beaten by Division Two side Burrin Celtic by the solitary goal.

The visitors started the game the stronger team and played the better football. They were awarded a penalty on 10 minutes when David Wilson was fouled in the box. Liam Brennan stepped up and slotted the spot kick home. The Ballytore side came to terms with this setback but found Craig Doyle in the Burrin goal impossible to beat. The home side dominated the second half and peppered the Burrin goal hitting the post a number of times. Even when Doyle was beaten Eoin Smithers cleared off the line on 85 minutes to see them through to the next round.

Sean Smithers ran in four goals during the course of the half with the best being the last when he weaved his way through the Celtic defence before calmly slotting up to score his fifth of the say and Vales’ ninth of the day.

Best for the winner were Andrew Townsend, John Miley, Billy Lennon O’Brien and Smithers. It was a disappointing day at the office of Mill Celtic.

Mill Celtic 2

Parkville United 4

Parkville’s second string made the long trip to Ballitore worthwhile as they leaped frogged Mill Celtic to go top of Division One.

The game was close early on with both sides creating chances. James Lonergan went close before Brian Condon hit the post. The home side were dangerous on the break and Eoin O’Neill opened the scoring following a good through ball on 20 minutes. Parkville upped the tempo and scored the equaliser soon after following a great team move. Cian Madden and Jason Hunter combined in midfield and released Niall Byrne and James Lonergan who combined to set up TJ Kavanagh who buried his effort to the bottom corner on 35 minutes. Shortly before half time the visitors took the lead when Niall Byrne’s audacious back heel set TJ Kavanagh free and he made no mistake with his second.

The second half saw the Ballitore side take the game to Parkville in the early stages but they found the Parkville defence of John Murphy, Lee Kavanagh, Paddy Hickey and Michael Brown difficult to break down. On the couple of occasions Mill managed to breach the rear-guard James Lonergan made an excellent intervention to keep Parkville ahead. The Tullow side continued to create chances with Matt Decaux and Sean Maher energetic in the middle of the park and with 12 minutes to go TJ Kavanagh turned provider for Niall Byrne and the ace marksman made no mistake to put them 1-3 up. Parkville tails were up now and soon after TJ Kavanagh rounded off a great performance when coolly slotting home his side’s fourth for his hat trick. Credit to Mill they never gave up and pulled one back in injury time with an Aaron Kennedy expertly dispatched free kick.

Best for Parkville were TJ Kavanagh, James Lonergan and Michael Brown. For Mill Alan Norton, Harry Kirwan and Corey Maher were players of note.

Mill Celtic continued their unbeaten run with this hard-fought draw against St. Fiacc’s in the Presentation College on Sunday.

Chances were at a premium early in the game with Aaron Kennedy coming closest for the away side when he fired narrowly over from just inside the box. Neither side were willing to give an inch but this changed in first half injury time when Saints’ Brian O’Rourke was fouled in the penalty box and Oisin Ayres expertly slotted past Korey Maher in the Mill goal.
