Rovers got their season off to the perfect start as their easily overcame Kilree in Rathvilly on Sunday.

The hosts threatened from the start but had to wait 20 minutes for the opener, but it was worth the wait. Stephen Farrell picking up a loose ball 25 yards from goal before firing a rocket to the net for 1-0. Kilree's best chance of an equaliser fell to Shane Salter but he fired his shot over the crossbar on 35 minutes and Rovers made them pay the price just before the break when Dominic Byrne weaved his way past three defenders before teeing up Aaron Broughall to make it 2-0 at half time.

Any thoughts Kilree had of a comeback were dashed two minutes after the restart, Rovers were awarded a penalty and Broughall slotted home from 12 yards for his second and the hosts’ third. With the game effectively over Rovers took their foot off the gas and it wasn't until five minutes from time that goal number four arrived, a fine solo effort from Rory McKernan finishing off the scoring as the hosts advanced to reward the efforts of Eoin Curran, Michael Foley and Lesko Lubomir. Kilree’s best included Alan Salter, Paul Kehoe and Shane Salter.

Slaney Rovers v Crettyard United
Premier Division 15/09 11:00
Slaney Rovers 2 - 0 Crettyard United

Slaney Rovers 2

Crettyard United 0

Second half goals from Lubomir Lesko and Daniel O’Brien saw newly promoted Rovers cause a major upset on the opening day of the Premier Division season as serial league winners United crashed to defeat.

Crettyard started well enough but despite controlling the early exchanges they rarely threatened Fergal Harmon in the Rovers goal. The hosts began to find their feet as the half wore on and Conor O’Brien'’ effort from distance flew just the wrong side of the post. Another long-range effort from the hosts, this time from Dominic Byrne also went just wide as the sides went into the break at 0-0.

United were slow out of the blocks at the start of the second half and Rovers made them pay in emphatic fashion with two goals in six minutes. The first arrived on 50 minutes, Conor O'Brien's pass released Lesko and his powerful run and fine finish put Rovers 1-0 up. It got worse for United shortly afterwards as Daniel O'Brien's cross was finished to the net by Aaron Broughall to double the lead. Crettyard threw everything at Slaney with Cristoir Maher and Niall Purcell to the fore but the hosts rear guard held firm and Rovers claimed a well-deserved three points to reward the efforts of Shane Murphy, Eoin Curran and Paddy Farrell.

Although only the first game of the season, the defeat is huge blow to United who only had Cris Maher, Bobby Dowling and Niall Purcell performing to their usual high standards.
