St Patricks Boys v Slaney Rovers

St Patricks Boys 3 - 2 Slaney Rovers

St Patrick’s Boys 3

Slaney Rovers 2

Slaney got off to the perfect start with a goal on two minutes following great build-up play between Lubomir Lesko and Aaron Broughall and a fine finish from Daniel O’Brien. A flick-on from a corner into the path of Lesko who fired home from just outside the box made it 0-2 on 16 minutes. So dominant were Slaney that it would be 30 minutes before Pat's had their first shot at goal.

They were two down at the break and not playing well, there seemed little hope for Pat's but they were given a lifeline after 52 minutes when a cross from Liam Byrne was headed home by Luke Keogh. Just four minutes later the sides were level when Mazin Almujarfi was fouled in the box and Chris Gaul scored from the penalty spot. The game was now in the balance and both sides fighting for the next goal. On 79 minutes Chris Gaul intercepted a lose pass as Slaney tried to build from the back, he drove into the box and slotted pass the advancing keeper for what would prove to be the winner.

Best for Pat’s were Anto Lawlor, Chris Gaul and Nathan Doyle. For Slaney there were best efforts from Colm O’Connor and Stephen Farrell.

The point earned in Tullow sees Rovers level on points with Hanover at the top of the table although both New Oak and Crettyard have played less games.

On a cold morning there was little goal mouth action in the opening quarter before things started to warm up a little before half time. Slaney passing up on a couple of excellent chances to open the scoring, the first falling to Daniel O'Brien who fired into the side netting before Lubomir Lesko brought smart save from the United's Sean Tompkins. Parkville's best chance of the half fell to TJ Kavanagh but his volley flashed across the face of goal and went wide.

The second half saw United have an early chance for Dillon Kenny but his 20 yarder just cleared the crossbar. Rovers keeper Fergal Harmon then saved twice to keep United out, TJ Kavanagh and Jack Kennedy both denied by good saves. Despite United making most of the chances the best opening of the game fell to Rovers late on as O'Brien set up Lesko but his shot crashed off the crossbar and the sides had to be content with a point apiece.

Best for United were Tom Pollard, TJ Kavanagh and Jamie Welsh. Standing out for Rovers were Stephen Farrell and Ruairi Tompkins.

A lone first strike from Lubomir Lesko was enough for Rovers to take points and cement their place in the top half of the table, third only on goal difference from Crettyard.

Killeshin started the better of the sides but were caught on the break 12 minutes in, Daniel O’Brien breaking down the wing before squaring for Lesko to slot the visitors ahead. Thereafter there were chances at both ends, Fergal Harmon in the Rovers goal pulled off a fine save to deny Dylan Regan and then Harmon saved a header from Gary Scully which looked destined for the net on the half hour. Aaron Broughall had a chance to double the Rovers lead just before the break but he shot wide with only the 'keeper to beat.

The second half was more of the same with both sides creating and missing chances, Dominic Byrne, Aaron Broughall and Daniel O’Brien all had chances to put the game to bed for Rovers but not could find the target when well placed. Killeshin hard their own chances to take a point, Dylan Regan and Shane Martin with the best of them but it was Lesko’s early strike which proved the match winner for the visitors.

Best for Slaney were Andy Foley, Stephen Farrell and Eoin Curran. Killeshin’s best included John Fleming, Ian Brennan and Shane Coakley.
