Nurney Villa v Kilree Celtic
ladies carlow cup 18/02 11:00
Nurney Villa 0 - 1 Kilree Celtic

Nurney Villa 0

Kilree Celtic 1

Kilree Celtic are the only Division Two side left in the Carlow Cup after they defeated Nurney Villa.

Kilree took the lead straight from the kick off when they attacked down the right-hand side and the ball found its way across to Sandra Walsh who rifled it into the bottom corner. Tish Murphy almost equalised after 20 minutes after a driving run from the left but her shot was just wide. Just before half-time, Nurney created their best chance when Nicola Nolan found Ellen Murphy on the wing and her superb cross was met by Susan O’Leary’s head but again it was inches past the post as Kilree held on to their one goal lead at the break.

Nurney tried to crank up the pressure in the second half and despite the midfield duo of Nicola Nolan and Lisa Dermody dominating possession they couldn’t break through the dogged Kilree defence. Even when they did break through the Kilree goalkeeper was in top form, making saves from Nolan twice and Ellen Murphy. Kilree held out to advance to the next round.

Best for Kilree were Lorraine O’Rourke, Megan Dwyer and Leona Lee while Nurney had excellent performances from Jacinta Kearney, Philomena Clarke and Nicola Nolan.

Nurney Villa v St Patricks Boys
17/02 14:30
Nurney Villa 1 - 4 St Patricks Boys

Nurney Villa AFC 1

St Patrick’s Boys 4

Nurney were forced to relinquish home advantage, as their own pitch was deemed unplayable and so it was played in Tinryland, courtesy of St Joseph’s AFC on a beautiful Spring afternoon and these two teams served up a cracking match with no quarter given or requested.

Nurney started strongly with Jack Malone having an effort that went just over the bar on nine minutes after a fine pass from Mark Foley. St Pat’s started to gain control of the mid-field and took the game by the scruff of the neck. They broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when Nurney’s Liam Ryan had a good shot saved by the St Pat’s keeper who immediately launched a long kick over the Nurney defence and this was latched on to by the prolific Lord Afrifa and he swept the ball home for a 0-1 lead. On 38 minutes Lord Afrifa doubled his tally as he scored again for St Pat’s to go 0-2 up and they took this score into the interval.

Nurney came out firing on all cylinders in the opening minutes of the second-half and after just seven minutes some trojan work by Jack Treacy earned him a free-kick which he took and the lively Cormac Lomax headed home a fine goal to make it 1-2. It looked as if, Nurney were going to get back into the game but a quick-fire double by St Pat’s Andrew Kehoe on 56 minutes and Colin Dunne on 59 minutes took the score to a convincing 1-4 lead to St Pat’s. Effectively it was game over although Nurney never gave up with Louis Brennan prominent in trying to get Nurney back into the match but it just wasn’t to be with St Pat’s inflicting a first loss of the season on Nurney Villa.

It was a battling performance by Nurney and a super performance from the whole St Pat’s squad.
