St Fiacc’s FC 2

Vale Wanderers 1

St Fiacc’s came out on top in this very competitive game in the Presentation College on Sunday.

The home side took the lead through Courtney Forbes with a well taken goal. Vale came more into the game and put the Saints under pressure. They were rewarded when Susan O’Leary headed home from a Laura Kearney cross just before half time.

The second half was again a tense affair with both sides having great chances. It was the home side that took their chance when Courtney Forbes grabbed her second goal midway through the half to win the game.

Best for Fiaccs Ciara Corcoran, Sara Kerfra and Kelly O’Neill while Shauna Ó Neil, Claudia Earl and Jacinta Kearney stood out for Vale.

Vale Wanderers 1 - 2 Newpark AFC

Vale Wanderers 1

Newpark FC 2

Newpark played into a strong breeze in the first half and were under pressure for large parts and should have been behind early but for the exploits of Annie Dunne and Jayne Meagher in goal.

Vale eventually broke the deadlock on 35 minutes through Aoife Roache. Newpark started to get a foothold in the game and levelled just before the break when Denise Doyle was rewarded for her tireless work throughout the half.

The second half was a more evenly contested affair with chances at a premium and both defences working well. If ever you’re going to score a winner then the 90th minute is the time to strike and Newpark did just that when Abbie Wall found the net after some great work from Doyle and Sinead McGrane.

Best for Newpark were Annie Dunne, Jayne Meagher, Rosie Miller and Denise Doyle while it was an all-round impressive Vale performance.

Killeshin FC 2 - 5 Vale Wanderers

Killeshin AFC 2

Vale Wanderers 5

An under-strength Killeshin team were well beaten by table toppers Vale Wanderers who continued their fine run in search of the Championship.

Vale quickly went 0-3 up before Killeshin pulled a goal back through Daniel Core who got on the end of a free-kick and volleyed home to make it 1-3 and that was the score at the interval.

Killeshin started the brighter in the second half but Vale extended their lead to 1-4 with another goal. Killeshin reacted well to this further reverse as Mikey Dempsey was on hand to nod home a fine cross from Herbert Mazur, to make it 2-4. Vale never stopped pressing and near the end they scored again to make the final score 2-5 and maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Best for Killeshin were Hubert Mazur, Daniel Hegarty, Kian Dooley and Eamon Moran, who tried ever so hard all day and it was an outstanding team effort from the Vale lads.

Vale Wanderers 2 - 3 Thomastown United

Vale Wanderers 2

Thomastown United 3

This was a high tempo encounter between two good passing teams.

Vale opened the scoring on 22 minutes with a fine long-range strike from Keeva Collins. Thomastown started to settle into proceedings and levelled on 26 minutes with an instinctive finish from Ashling Brennan. Thomastown took the lead just before the break with a clever finish from Lauren McCormack to the right-hand corner of the goal.

The table toppers started the second half much the better and were two goals clear on the hour mark when Jenny Brennan scored a superb free kick. Vale continued to push forward however and were rewarded for doing so when the pacey Philomena Murphy got on the end of a cut back to score from close range to set up a thrilling finish. This would only prove to be a conciliation however as Thomastown held on for a hard-fought victory to consolidate their position at the top.

An excellent team performance from Vale with Noleen Maher, Aoife Roache and Keeva Collins standing out while Holly Brennan and Ashling Brennan and Sarah Welsh worked hard for the winners

Vale Wanderers 3 - 4 Crettyard United

Vale Wanderers 3

Crettyard United 4

A young Vale side pushed Premier side Crettyard to the limit in this Shield encounter at the Superbowl on Sunday.

The visitors hit the front early on when Christor Maher sent his free all the way to the net on 15 minutes. Danny Doyle was a constant threat and he was denied by a fine save on 30 minutes. At the other end Luke Maher denied Billy Lennon O’Brien with a goal line clearance to leave the visitors 1-0 up at the break.

In the second half Vale’s attack came to life and on 55 minutes Sean Smithers squared for Willie Kavanagh to tap home the equaliser. The Laois side began to dominate and scored two quick fire goals through Gearoid Cuddihy and Luke Maher to lead 3-1. Back came Vale and Smithers again was the orchestrator when setting up debutant James Dowling to score his second of the game. Lee Salter was sprung from the bench and he duly scored on 70 minutes to restore Cretty’s two goal cushion. However, the home side failed to lie down and again it was the quick thinking of Smithers from a corner kick that set up Jack Treacy to volley home from the edge of the area to make it 4-3. Vale tried valiantly in the last six minutes but the Premier side held on to advance.

Best for Cretty were Seamus Dowling, Danny Doyle and Craig Comerford while for Vale it was a gallant all round team performance.

Hanover Harps 1 - 0 Vale Wanderers

Hanover Harps 1

Vale Wanderers 0 AET

Hanover has to show all their resolve to book their place in the semi-finals against a well organised and disciplined Vale unit who had their own what if moments throughout the encounter.

Rachael Whelan led the line well for Harps and her link up play deserved more as Harps were wasteful in front of goal with the best chance of the half falling to Essmay Murphy who struck the post when put thru on goal by Steph Kehoe.

Christine Middleton was called into action early in the second half and produced a couple of fine saves the best of which she touched Aoife Roache’s left foot strike onto the post. Hanover just couldn’t find that finishing touch as the game progressed despite the efforts of Leanne Tumelty, Lauren McGrath, Murphy, Whelan and Nicole Dowling.

The game went to extra time and Hanover finally broke the deadlock 6 minutes in when Dowling stepped up to a 25-yard free kick and after having three sighters earlier found her range this time to put Hanover into the hat after a hard-fought victory.

Shannon Myles, Laura Kearney and Shauna O’Neill impressed for Vale while Lauren McGrath, Leanne Tumelty, Marie Hynes and Nicole Dowling we’re on point for the Harps.

New Oak Boys B 0 - 3 Vale Wanderers

New Oak Boys 0

Vale kept up the pressure on the league leaders when they travelled to Carlow to take on New Oak on Sunday.

The visitors had some good early chances with Craig Doyle and Tommy Cummins going close. The home side began to settle and Peter Fagan went close. Sol Yabre missed an excellent opportunity for Boys and Vale sprung a counterattack and Willie Kavanagh set up Jack Treacy to finish on 30 minutes. The remainder of the half was even with Vale leading at half time

The Leighlinbridge side dominated the second half. Willie Kavanagh went close on two occasions before eventually getting on the scoresheet after Jack Treacy played him through on 55 minutes. Tommy Cummins sealed the victory when Jack Treacy pinged a great cross field ball and the young striker surprised everyone by heading the ball back across the goalie and into the net. James Dowling then came on to make his debut as Vale saw out the game.

Best for Vale were Cormac O'Hara, Craig Doyle and Jack Treacy. Best for New Oak were Johnny Furey, John Gilligan and Jack Lawler.

Crettyard United 3 - 3 Vale Wanderers

Crettyard United 3

Vale Wanderers 3

Crettyard hosted Vale in a top of the table clash that had everything where both teams had a titanic struggle but there was an enormous amount of clever tactical play involved as well as both teams sought supremacy.

Crettyard took an early lead when a Vale defensive error allowed Jamie Maher to pick up a loose ball and rifle home the ball into the net for 1-0. Vale then started to get on top and they finished the half the stronger but Crettyard were still holding on to their slender 1-0 lead as the interval came.

Vale equalised early in the second-half when James Dowling got on the end of Jake Doyle’s fine cross to make it 1-1 and 15 minutes later Vale scored again when P J Haughney cut in from the left and struck a sweet strike at the Crettyard keeper who fumbled his save and pushed it into James Dowling’s path and he made no mistake scoring his brace and making it 1-2 to Vale. Crettyard equalised within five minutes when after a great run by Tobi Olaoye enabled him to set up Jamie Maher to score his brace and make it 2-2. Vale were reduced to ten men and Crettyard took full advantage of their numerical supremacy and pressed Vale hard but they got caught on a counter-attack as James Dowling found space down the left and he ran through to score again and complete a fine hat-trick and make the score 2-3 to Vale with little time left. Crettyard showed their fighting spirit and never say die attitude as Tadhg Dunne snatched a very late equaliser with the last kick of the match to level the scores at 3-3 and that’s how it finished.

This was an exciting and pulsating game and a draw was a fair result but it still leaves Vale top of the league by five points so they will take some catching.

St Fiacc’s FC 1

Vale kept up their winning streak on a frozen pitch in the Presentation College Carlow on Sunday.

The frozen conditions took its toll and the visitors were forced into a substitution inside the first few minutes. Both teams resorted to long ball tactics which resulted in a poor first half. Brian O’Rourke had a good chance to give Fiacc’s the lead when he raced onto a long ball but was denied by a smart save from the Dinny Byrne in the Vale goal. The Leighlinbridge side took the lead on 25 minutes when Lee Conran swung a corner in and Craig Doyle headed home. The remainder of the half was uneventful with Vale digging in to grind out the result.

In the second half the home side levelled matters when Wayne Humphries sent an unstoppable shot to the back of the net just a few minutes in. The game was end to end with both sides creating chances. Vale’s Sean Smithers finally broke the offside trap after he was put through by Craig Doyle to slot home to restore his side’s lead. The Graiguecullen side went in search of an equaliser only for Eoin Aylesbury see his header come back off the crossbar. Vale went on the counterattack and Smithers broke free again but his curling shot was saved by a defender which resulted in a penalty and a red card. Craig Doyle stepped up to take the penalty and seal the points for Vale.

In what was an all-round great team performance special mention must go to Vale goalie Dinny Byrne who made two exceptional saves during the match. Best for Fiacc’s were Denis Hand, James Hickey and Mícheál Loughman.

Mill Celtic 2

Vale Wanderers 4

Mill Celtic entertained Vale this morning looking to stop their recent slump in form but it was not to be.

In a thrilling encounter the visitors went in front on ten minutes through Willie Kavanagh. The home side equalised through Andrew Baldwin to leave the sides all square at the break.

The Leighlinbridge side stepped it a gear in the second half and Jack Treacy converted an Andrew Townsend corner. Craig Doyle made it 3-1 following a Willie Kavanagh assist. But back came Celtic and Euan Cullen reduced the deficit. Sean Smithers dashed any hopes of a Mill revival however when he finished from close range to secure the points.

It was a brilliant all-round team performance by Vale and best for Mill were Corey Maher, Jason McHugh and Andrew Baldwin.

Vale Wanderers 1 - 6 Hanover Harps

Vale Wanderers 1

Hanover Harps 6

The fear for the Hanover unit was how would they start the second half of the season following a five-week break and the signs in the early running weren’t good as Vale took full advantage throughout the opening 20 minutes and were unlucky to be only a goal up. The Vale goal came on 15 minutes when Philomena Murphy crossed for Aoife Roache who produced a neat finish to the bottom corner. The Hanover response was slow in coming but when it did it was emphatic and the goal machine that is Essmay Murphy produced a 25-yard screamer following some good work from Leanne Tumelty and Sarah Keating for parity. Hanover took the lead right on half time following a defensive mix up and Murphy poked home her second.

A much more clinical and aggressive Hanover took to the field in the second half and Essmay Murphy soon had her hat trick. On the hour mark Steph Kehoe’s tireless running was rewarded when she chased down what looked an over hit pass only to get a toe on it a direct it home. Rachael Whelan and Leanne Tumelty combined to release Murphy to get her fourth with a clinical near post finish. It was left to the industrious Lauren McGrath to round off the scoring with a well-timed run and finish to reward the efforts of Kelly Nolan, Tasha Sheehan, Marie Hynes and Essmay Murphy while Nicole Hanley, Noleen Maher and Laura Kearney did well for Vale.

Vale Wanderers 3 - 1 Castle Rangers

Vale Wanderers 3

Castle Rangers 1

Vale got the better of Castle Rangers when they returned to action following the Christmas break at the Superbowl on Sunday.

The home side controlled large periods of the first half but struggled to pull away from a solid Castle side. Lee Conran hit the woodwork from distance while Sean Smithers and Willie Kavanagh also went close during this period of dominance. They finally broke the deadlock when John Miley hit a low hard free kick which beat the keeper from an acute angle.

The second half saw the Leighlinbridge side create more chances but it was the visitors who equalised when Danny O’Boyle’s free kick was headed on by Alan McDermott and Gary Murphy pounced to score on the hour mark. Vale retook the lead ten minutes later when Craig Doyle launched a long a ball forward, which John Miley and Lee Conran combined to release Craig Doyle who continued his run and finished past the keeper. Vale were flying now and John Miley sealed the game when he finished from close range.

Outstanding for the winners were John Miley Lee Conran and Sean Smithers while Mick Lawlor and Alan Butler were players of note for Rangers.

Vale Wanderers 7 - 1 Parkville United

Vale Wanderers 7

Parkville United 1

Parkville started very brightly and were well on top for the first third with Cian Doran coming the closest when he got on the end of a through ball but his shot went just over the bar.

Parkville’s continuing pressure was rewarded on 31 minutes when Eoin Dempsey struck the ball sweetly into the bottom corner of the Vale net, to give them a deserved 0-1 lead. However, Vale were quick to respond and they equalised on 36 minutes to make it 1-1 and then just before the interval Vale scored again and they took this slender 2-1 lead into the break.

The second half saw a much more confident Vale team take to the field and on 50 minutes they increased their lead to 3-1. Parkville stayed strong kept up the pressure and didn’t give up but Vale were now on fire and took every single one of their opportunities and scored another four goals to make the final score 7-1 to give them a very convincing victory. To be fair to Parkville, the score doesn’t do justice to their performance but they were up against a very clinical Vale team.

It was a very fine all-round team performance from Vale, whilst best for Parkville were Paddy O’Reilly, Myles Hutton and Cillian Fagan.

Vale ran riot against a badly depleted Mill Celtic in the Superbowl on Sunday.

The home side opened the scoring when Sean Smithers set Willie Kavanagh up to finish from close range. Youth team player Tommy Cummins made it 2-0 after excellent work by Jack Treacy. The Ballitore side pulled a goal back from the penalty spot with Brian Malone doing the honours to leave 2-1 at the break.

The Leighlinbridge side completely dominated the second half with Tommy Cummins completing his hat trick. Kieran Casey got in on the scoring act heading home a Jack Treacy corner. Sean Smithers ran in four goals during the course of the half with the best being the last when he weaved his way through the Celtic defence before calmly slotting up to score his fifth of the say and Vales’ ninth of the day.

Best for the winner were Andrew Townsend, John Miley, Billy Lennon O’Brien and Smithers. It was a disappointing day at the office of Mill Celtic.

St Joseph's FC 0 - 8 Vale Wanderers

St Joseph’s 0

Vale Wanderers 8

Vale started as though they were on fire as they took a 0-1 lead inside thirty seconds with Paddy McDonnell slotting home.

Vale went on to completely dominate the first half and they scored another four goals for a 0-5 interval lead with further goals coming from Paddy McDonnell for his brace and he was matched by James Dowling who also scored twice and another came from Robert Bulmer to complete the scoring as half-time came.

In the second-half Vale continued to stay on top and James Dowling scored again when he received a kick-out and went around his marker and then slipped the ball under the on-rushing Joey’s keeper to complete a fine hat-trick and give Vale a 0-6 lead. Jake Doyle then made it 0-7 when he scored a scrappy goal following a Vale corner-kick and Craig Kehoe finished off the scoring, with a good individual goal as he picked up the ball on half-way and took it around three Joey’s defenders in a mazy run and was eventually brought down for a penalty. Kehoe picked himself up and coolly slotted home the penalty for an emphatic final score of 0-8 as Vale continue their unbeaten run.

Credit goes to Joey’s who fought hard throughout the match and just never gave up whilst it was a tremendous team performance from Vale who on this form will take some beating as they have games in hand on the teams above them.
