Herald Striker Division 17/09 11:00
Vale Wanderers 2 - 2 Slaney Rovers

Vale Wanderers 2

Slaney Rovers 2

A share of the points was a fair result after this exciting encounter at the Superbowl in Leighlinbridge on Sunday.

It was end to end stuff throughout the game and it was the visitors who scored first when Daniel O’Brien finished from five yards after good work by Alan Ryan and Paddy Farrell. Vale grew more into the game and were soon level when John Miley finished off a Ceilum Darcy cross on the half hour. The home side doubled their lead shortly after when Brian Doyle played in Andy Brennan to fire home. Daniel O’Brien showed that he can score from long range when the sent a pile drive to the net from 25 yards to level the scores at the break.

During the second half, the crossbar came to Vale’s rescue on two occasions when Daniel O’Brien was denied twice and Alan Ryan also hit the metal work. At the other end Fergal Harmon pulled off a brilliant save to deny Vale a winner.

Best for Slaney were Shane Murphy, Jamie Byrne and Shane McGannon while it was a battler all round team performance for Wanderers.

Vale Wanderers v Celtic Stars
o35 Div 2 02/09 18:00
Vale Wanderers 1 - 0 Celtic Stars

Vale Wanderers 1

Celtic Stars 0

The game opened quietly, with both teams happy to knock the ball around and try and retain possession – Stars had some chances through William Dixon, PJ O’Keeffe and Dale Austin, but they were all spurned.

Vale started to gain the upper hand, with Trevor Nolan prominent in mid-field and it was Nolan who drove forward from mid-field and played in Pa Dowling who crossed to Mick Nevin, who could have scored himself, but unselfishly, he found Richard Kearney who nodded Vale in front, 1-0 and that was the interval score.

In the second half Vale were content to sit back and let Stars press and again they had chances from William Dixon and Martin Byrne, but the nearest they came to scoring was when a Senan Finucan shot hit the crossbar and was cleared. Doughty defending by Vale’s Keith Doyle and Michael Fenelon kept Stars at bay and the game was settled by that first-half solitary goal, in what was a very close match.

It was a fine team performance by a rapidly improving Vale and standing out for Stars were PJ O’Keeffe and Martin Byrne.

(Vale won 4-2 on penalties)

There were few chances in this close fought tie, with Mick Nevin and Pa Deane going closest for Vale and it was 0-0 at half-time.

Pa Deane broke the deadlock with a fine strike on the hour after being set up by Peter Doyle. Burrin equalised very late in the game for 1-1 at full time. Vale advanced after the penalty shoot-out by 4-2.

Both teams put in fine team performances.

Village FC v Vale Wanderers
o35 Div 2 19/08 18:00
Village FC 1 - 2 Vale Wanderers

Village FC 1

Vale Wanderers FC 2

A poor first half by both teams, produced no goals, although Village created the better opportunities and the interval came with a 0-0 score-line.

Village took a 1-0 lead, ten minutes into the second-half, against the run of play through Barry Fitzgerald, with a well worked goal, but Pa Deane equalised for 1-1, with a fine solo effort his first of the season and soon after Mick Nevin got another to give Vale a 1-2 victory.

It was a good, all-round team performance from Village, whilst standing out for Vale were Pa Dowling, John Dowling and Trev Nolan.
