A determined Baltinglass team rocked up to Hawkin’s Lane set on ending Parkville’s unbeaten run at home.

The visitors settled the better early on with some crisp passing without creating any clear-cut chances. On the half hour Parkville created the first real chance of the game with James Lonergan combining with TJ Kavanagh down the right before Lonergan saw his effort just wide. Baltinglass continued to pressure the Parkville defence but could find no way past John Murphy and Henry Hegarty as the game finished level at the break.

The second half saw the home side up the tempo as Michael Brown and Brian Condon were crunching into the tackles in midfield. The Wicklow side continued to play good football but were undone when Lee Kavanagh delivered a tantalising ball into the box that the keeper could only parry to James Lonergan who made no mistake on 60 minutes. Five minutes Parkville were awarded a penalty but it was saved to keep the game in the balance. Balto rallied after this save but Niall Byrne put a dent in their ambitions when he rounded the keeper to score on 70 minutes. Chris Heaslip was unlucky not to reduce the deficit when he was well founded by Eoin Gleeson but his effort was saved by Paddy Hickey. T.J. Kavanagh ran almost the length of the pitch to score to make it 3-0 and seal the points.

Best on the day for Parkville were Paddy Hickey, Jason Hunter and Niall Byrne. Best for Baltinglass were Eoin Gleeson, Stephen Heaslip and Paddy Barry.

A share of the points was probably a fair result after this close encounter in the Superbowl on Sunday.

The visitors got off to the better start and Ross Nolan was unlucky not to score on 12 minutes. The home side never got into the game and were lucky to be level at the break.

The Leighlinbridge side made a better start to the second half but suffered a real blow when reduced to ten men. This seemed to spur the home team into action and Jason Sinnott in the Town goal had to be at his best to deny Vale. They eventually broke the deadlock when Sean Smithers finished to the net following a long ball from Andrew Townsend. The Wicklow side responded positively and when Shane Lennon was fouled on 85 minutes, he drove the free kick to the net for a share of the points.

Mill Celtic 4 - 2 Baltinglass Town

Mill Celtic 4

Baltinglass Town 2

Mill Celtic entertained local rivals Baltinglass in Ballitore this morning in an early season top of the table clash, with both sides looking to carry on their unbeaten runs.

The home side settled the better with the midfield partnership of Alan Norton and James Fahey imposing themselves in the opening quarter. The opener arrived after 12 minutes when Shane Molloy played a good ball over the top to find Aaron Kennedy and he fired home with the outside of his left foot. Baltinglass to their credit bossed the next ten minutes before Shane Lennon grabbed a deserved equaliser with a perfectly placed free kick from 25 yards. The remainder of the half was an even affair with both sides cancelling each other out and the score remained one all at the break.

Mill started the second half much like they did the first and regained the lead after 54 minutes when Andrew Baldwin found himself one on one with the visiting goalkeeper and calmly slid home. Andrew Baldwin and twin brother James were getting through a mountain of work and their enterprise was rewarded after 60 minutes when a deep cross from the left was met by Aaron Kennedy who thumped a volley home to double Mill’s lead. The game looked safe at this stage but the visitors had other ideas and hauled themselves back into contention with ten minutes to go when another direct free kick by Shane Lennon found the top corner. Mill showed great character to dig in and the back four who were well marshalled by goalkeeper Maher stood firm. The game was finally sealed in the last minute when a throw in from the left was brilliantly flicked on by Eoin O’Neill and the ball found its way to Kennedy who poked home to put the icing on the cake.

Best for the Ballitore men on the day were the Baldwin brothers, Alan Norton and hat-trick hero Kennedy. Best for Baltinglass were Shane Lennon, Steven Heaslip and Ross Nolan.

Baltinglass Town 5 - 3 St Joseph's FC

Baltinglass Town 5

St. Joseph’s 3

St Joseph’s Senior team travelled to Baltinglass for the first round of the Shield Cup.

This was the first outing for the majority of these players in a senior competition outside of Youths football. Despite a nervous start by Joeys it was nip and tuck in the middle of the field with both sides playing attacking football. With chances created at both ends, it was the home team who were to capitalise first. Keeping their heads Joeys started to settle and in the 29th minute were awarded a free kick just outside the box, which was calmly converted by Evan McGuire to level the game. A much-needed confidence booster for the visitors saw them continue to press and a cross by Dylan McDermott into the home team’s box was deflected into the net leave Joeys 2-1 up at half time.

Baltinglass started strongly in the second half and it wasn’t long till they found the equaliser. The home team started to take control of the game, but on a counter-attack Kit Gaffney found Dylan McDermott, who received the ball inside the box, and he slotted it into the bottom left to put the visitors back on top. Joeys, who fought hard for 15 minutes to hold onto this lead were soon broken down and the game was level once again. With tired legs Joeys were under constant pressure for the last 15 minutes and eventually the experience of the home team proved too much and they added two more to their tally leaving the final score 5-3.

A great debut for this young team and a great performance by all.

Village FC 1

Extremely blustery conditions in Bagenalstown on Friday evening meant that both sides had difficulty gaining a foothold during a particularly lacklustre first half.

Paddy Sinnott, Derek Nolan and James Gahan all went close with chances for the Wicklow side with Gahan heading short of the goal in the tenth minute. The deadlock was eventually broken after Village took the match to Baltinglass from the opening of the second half and were awarded a corner for their efforts. Darren Foley's beautiful in-swinger was unmet and sailed straight into the left top-corner. Baltinglass however soon rallied and turned the game around with three goals to close out the game as victors in spite of some stout defending by Village. Sinnott struck first on the hour mark. Two more chances gave Balto their second and third goal to win the game after coming back from one down.

Best for Village FC were John Monaghan, Jerry Walsh and Liam Walsh. Best for Baltinglass were John Gillespie Brian Nolan and James Gahan.

Baltinglass and Burrin played out a very evenly contested first-half, although Baltinglass had several half chances but they couldn’t capitalise on any of them and the interval came, and it was scoreless.

Baltinglass opened the scoring, mid-way through the second-half, with a fine headed goal from James Gahan following an assist from Paddy Sinnott for a deserved 1-0 lead.

With Burrin looking for an equaliser, Baltinglass caught them on the counter, as a ball from Paudi Swinburn found James Gahan, who in turn found Declan Jones, who went straight for goal and scored for 2-0, in the sixty-fifth minute and that’s how it ended.

It was a good, all-round team performance from Baltinglass, whilst best for Burrin were Darren Moore, Conor Dooley and Brendan Butler.
