St Pat’s earned a first league win of the season while last season’s champions Hanover are still searching for their first three pointer after this clash on Sunday.

The visitors started well and were in front on 12 minutes, Chris Gaul given the freedom of the six-yard box to head home Gearoid Cuddihy’s free kick. It was 2-0 shortly afterwards in somewhat bizarre fashion. Cuddihy’s free kick from half way posed little threat but Harps keeper and defenders lost sight of the ball with the low sun in their eyes and the ball bounced into the net. Hanover upped the tempo for the remainder of the half but only had two shots off the crossbar to show for their efforts, first a Sean Kavanagh header and then a Ben Dorgan shot both kept out by the goal frame.

The second half saw Harps on the front foot but ten minutes in it was 3-0 to the visitors, a quick break up field yielded a free kick which Liam Byrne drove arrow like into the top corner. Hanover reduced the arrears shortly afterwards with a well-placed header from Stephen Chalton but any hopes of a comeback were dashed on 70 minutes when Ethan O’Neill slotted home from the penalty spot after a foul on Roy Byrne. Hanover and Chalton finished off the scoring as the left back netted his second of the game with a brilliant volley from 15 yards but it came too late to change the game.

Best for the winners included Michael Calvey, Chris Gaul, Johnny Dowling and Roy Byrne. Hanover’s best included Stephen Chalton, Niall Swan and Cathal Coughlan.
