Premier Division 08/03 11:00
Crettyard United 3 - 1 Killeshin FC

Crettyard United 3

Killeshin FC 1

United hauled themselves right back into the title race as three second half goals saw them claim the points and leave Killeshin looking over their shoulders as Ballymurphy’s win in Tullow leaves them just four points off the bottom.

The first half was a story of missed chances from both sides. Killeshin’s Adam Steed fired over when well-placed after 15 minutes. It was then United’s turn to waste chances, Gearoid Cuddihy and Lee Salter both off target for the hosts. The best chance of the half fell to Killeshin and Michael O’Rourke but he managed to clear the crossbar from six yards.

Crettyard were much better in the second half and opened the scoring on the hour. Danny Doyle raced through midfield before being felled in the box for a penalty which he duly converted to put the hosts 1-0 up. That advantage was doubled 15 minutes later, Craig Comerford’s corner firmly headed to the net by Lee Salter for 2-0. Steed headed narrowly wide as Killeshin tried to respond and with five minutes left they were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty, converted by Steed. Thoughts of a comeback were dashed almost immediately as Cristoir Maher teed up Salter for his second and United’s third with a neat lob over the advancing keeper to put the result beyond doubt.

Best for Crettyard were Lee Salter, Danny Doyle and Gearoid Cuddihy. Killeshin had good performances from Ian Brennan, Michael O’Rourke, Niall Scully and Brendan McDonald.

Crettyard United v New Oak Boys
Youths Cup 07/03 14:30
Crettyard United 0 - 1 New Oak Boys

Crettyard United 0

New Oak Boys 1

New Oak took an early 0-1 lead after only ten minutes when Brandon Doyle slipped through a pass to David Ujadughele who coolly fired home to stun Crettyard.

Thereafter Crettyard completely dominated the rest of the game but just couldn’t break down a dogged and stubborn New Oak defence as they sat back and defended their slender lead and at half-time it was still 0-1 to New Oak.

In the second-half, Crettyard threw caution to the wind and attacked in numbers but the nearest that they came to scoring was when a shot was remarkably cleared off the line by Jack Lawlor as the whole New Oak team battled manfully to stem the flow of Crettyard attacks. Crettyard won a corner in injury time but a quick counterattack by David Ujadughele and he was one on one with the Crettyard keeper but his shot went narrowly wide and it ended 0-1 to New Oak.

This was a terrific performance by New Oak where the whole team played well but Brandon Doyle and Jack Lawlor deserve a special mention for their efforts as they shone throughout the game. It was a good all-round team performance from Crettyard but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

Crettyard United 3 - 0 Burrin Celtic

Crettyard United 3

Burrin Celtic 0

In very wet and blustery conditions, second-placed Crettyard consolidated their position at the top of the Division with a really comfortable 3-0 victory over mid-table Burrin.

All the goals came in the first half as Burrin had no answer to the speedy and tricky Crettyard attackers their first coming from the boot of Ian Shanahan with a tidy finish around the Burrin keeper for 1-0. Shanahan turned provider for their second as he magnificently set up Tobi Alaoye who finished really well for 2-0 and Crettyard were cruising. On a rare Burrin attack they looked certain to score but Crettyard’s keeper Josh Kelly made a great save and then another from the rebound to keep out Burrin. Luke Phillips completed the scoring at 3-0 when he coolly despatched a penalty into the net and that was the score as half-time came.

In the second half the pitch cut up badly and that made it very difficult to play any kind of football it was really just one hard slog for all the players and it ended with a 3-0 score line.

Standing out for Crettyard were Luke Phillips, Shane Buggy, Victor Oladapo and Dara Kelly, whilst it was a good hard-working team performance from Burrin.

Crettyard United 2 - 0 New Oak Boys

Crettyard United 2

New Oak Boys 0

The game was played in very blustery conditions courtesy of Storm Ciara which made for very tough conditions for both teams to play in and it was very difficult for all the players to adapt to this appalling weather.

Nonetheless both teams did their best to combat the conditions and it was Crettyard who were playing against the wind who looked the more likely to score as they fashioned a number of chances. One chance fell to Tobi Olaoye but he snatched at his shot and it went wide of the mark and then Ian Shanahan’s fine effort hit the inside of the New Oak post and was gratefully gathered by Shaun Geoghegan New Oak’s keeper. New Oak didn’t just sit back they went at Crettyard hard with Daniel Hayden starting numerous attacks from midfield but none of the chances created were clear-cut and the interval came with a 0-0 score-line.

The second half started pretty much the same as the first with both teams being very well matched however Crettyard took a 1-0 lead with a fantastic team goal involving all of eight players which eventually gave John Brennan the opportunity to play in Tobi Olaoye to finish the move with aplomb. Almost immediately New Oak had a great opportunity to equalise when David went through on goal but he narrowly missed the target and the chance went abegging. Crettyard’s second goal came on seventy-five minutes when a well-worked short corner by Ian Shanahan and Luke Ramsbottom saw the resultant cross emphatically headed home by Shane Buggy to make it 2-0 and essentially game over as Crettyard played out the remaining time that was left to gain a well- deserved victory.

Standing out for Crettyard were Daniel Phillips, Shane Buggy and Kyle Rice, whilst best for New Oak were Jack Lawlor, Brandon Doyle and Daniel Hayden.

Vale Wanderers 3 - 4 Crettyard United

Vale Wanderers 3

Crettyard United 4

A young Vale side pushed Premier side Crettyard to the limit in this Shield encounter at the Superbowl on Sunday.

The visitors hit the front early on when Christor Maher sent his free all the way to the net on 15 minutes. Danny Doyle was a constant threat and he was denied by a fine save on 30 minutes. At the other end Luke Maher denied Billy Lennon O’Brien with a goal line clearance to leave the visitors 1-0 up at the break.

In the second half Vale’s attack came to life and on 55 minutes Sean Smithers squared for Willie Kavanagh to tap home the equaliser. The Laois side began to dominate and scored two quick fire goals through Gearoid Cuddihy and Luke Maher to lead 3-1. Back came Vale and Smithers again was the orchestrator when setting up debutant James Dowling to score his second of the game. Lee Salter was sprung from the bench and he duly scored on 70 minutes to restore Cretty’s two goal cushion. However, the home side failed to lie down and again it was the quick thinking of Smithers from a corner kick that set up Jack Treacy to volley home from the edge of the area to make it 4-3. Vale tried valiantly in the last six minutes but the Premier side held on to advance.

Best for Cretty were Seamus Dowling, Danny Doyle and Craig Comerford while for Vale it was a gallant all round team performance.

Crettyard United 3 - 0 Killeshin FC

Crettyard United 3

Killeshin FC 0

Crettyard hosted Killeshin in a local derby and as always in these types of games it was full of action throughout.

It was Crettyard who started the better of the two teams as they won a series of corners and from one of these Luke Phillips rose highest to head home for 1-0 to Crettyard. After falling behind Killeshin were the team who looked the more likely to score but both sides were working really hard with each side having a gilt-edged chance apiece Killeshin’s fell to Mikey Dempsey who shot just over the bar from inside the box and for Crettyard Ian Shanahan’s fierce shot was well saved by Killeshin’s keeper Craig Doyle. The interval came with Crettyard holding on to that slender 1-0 lead.

Killeshin went on the attack early in the second-half but were undone with a swift counter-attack following a Killeshin corner as Tobo Olaoye went on a fantastic run down the left and he crossed in for Luke Bailey to flick on to Ian Shanahan to head firmly home and make the score 2-0. Killeshin now had a really uphill task to try and get something out of this game but they were undone again as a great cross from Crettyard’s Ciaran Burke found Luke Phillips to head home for his brace and make the score an unassailable 3-0 lead as time was quickly running out. Killeshin tried hard right to the finish, but they couldn’t really trouble the Crettyard defence or their keeper and it ended 3-0 to Crettyard.

Standing out for Crettyard were Luke Phillips, Luke Ramsbottom and John Brennan, whilst best for Killeshin were Lee Nolan, Kaelum Hand and Evan Tracey.

Crettyard United v Vale Wanderers
Youths league 25/01 14:30
Crettyard United 3 - 3 Vale Wanderers

Crettyard United 3

Vale Wanderers 3

Crettyard hosted Vale in a top of the table clash that had everything where both teams had a titanic struggle but there was an enormous amount of clever tactical play involved as well as both teams sought supremacy.

Crettyard took an early lead when a Vale defensive error allowed Jamie Maher to pick up a loose ball and rifle home the ball into the net for 1-0. Vale then started to get on top and they finished the half the stronger but Crettyard were still holding on to their slender 1-0 lead as the interval came.

Vale equalised early in the second-half when James Dowling got on the end of Jake Doyle’s fine cross to make it 1-1 and 15 minutes later Vale scored again when P J Haughney cut in from the left and struck a sweet strike at the Crettyard keeper who fumbled his save and pushed it into James Dowling’s path and he made no mistake scoring his brace and making it 1-2 to Vale. Crettyard equalised within five minutes when after a great run by Tobi Olaoye enabled him to set up Jamie Maher to score his brace and make it 2-2. Vale were reduced to ten men and Crettyard took full advantage of their numerical supremacy and pressed Vale hard but they got caught on a counter-attack as James Dowling found space down the left and he ran through to score again and complete a fine hat-trick and make the score 2-3 to Vale with little time left. Crettyard showed their fighting spirit and never say die attitude as Tadhg Dunne snatched a very late equaliser with the last kick of the match to level the scores at 3-3 and that’s how it finished.

This was an exciting and pulsating game and a draw was a fair result but it still leaves Vale top of the league by five points so they will take some catching.

Crettyard were on a completely different level to Joey’s as they completely overwhelmed them scoring goal after goal almost at will right throughout the game with a totally dominant performance.

Crettyard were in front by 8-0 at the interval with a brace apiece for Jamie Maher and Luke Phillips as well as a hat-trick from Ian Shanahan and a header from Tobi Olaoye.

Crettyard rang the changes at half-time giving opportunities to their younger players and they took full advantage as they kept up the pressure on Joey’s as they showed their skills and eagerness for more goals. Tobi Olaoye scored another three goals to take his tally to four goals and Luke Bailey showed his class as he beat two men in the box and struck a fierce shot into the top corner of the Joey’s net and then a fine cross from Dara Kelly enabled Bailey to score again, for his brace. Peter Grogan then fired an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner and Luke Bailey became the third Crettyard player to complete a hat-trick with another goal with only minutes left to make the final score a comprehensive 15-0 victory.

It was a brilliant team performance from Crettyard and commiserations to Joey’s who were on the receiving end of this onslaught but in fairness to them they battled manfully and never gave up at all they just met a team who were on fire and irresistible.

New Oak Boys 1

Crettyard United 7

Crettyard had the very best of starts as after only two minutes Jamie Maher lobbed the New Oak keeper from all of thirty yards to take a 0-1 lead that they never relinquished throughout the game. This early lead set the basis for a dominant control of the game as Crettyard went on to score at regular intervals throughout the game. New Oak were unabashed by this early reverse and they were unlucky not to score when Ben Coakley saw his fierce driven free kick rebound off the crossbar and to safety and New Oak always looked threatening on the counterattack and also from set pieces. Crettyard’s Jamie Maher’s brilliance in the box earned them a 0-2 lead on twenty minutes and a couple of minutes later Shane Buggy smashed home an unstoppable shot for a 0-3 lead and Jamie Maher then completed his hat-trick with a really tidy left-footed finish to make the half-time score a very comfortable 0-4 to Crettyard.

In the second-half New Oak came out as a completely different team as Brandon Doyle and Daniel Murphy caused Crettyard’s defence some problems from out in wide areas but they got caught on the break once again and shipped another goal that was scored by Luke Phillips who made it 0-5. New Oak were unlucky to be denied a penalty when Ben Coakley was taken down in the box and then just after the hour mark David and Denis combined well together to work a chance that was credited to David and make the score 1-5 to Crettyard. Crettyard then took control of the next phase of play and killed off the game with two quick-fire goals from Tadgh Dunne and the pick of the bunch from Ian Shanahan to make the final score 1-7 to Crettyard who were worthy winners.

It was a spirited display from New Oak who never gave up and best for Crettyard were hat-trick hero Jamie Maher, Victor Oladapo, Luke Ramsbottom and Orrie Doran

Enniskerry 0 - 3 Crettyard United

Enniskerry 0

A brace from Lee Salter helped last season’s beaten finalists advance in the provincial Cup.

United started well and could have been in front inside ten minutes, Danny Doyle and Anto Fitzpatrick both mistiming runs and getting caught offside when very well placed. The deadlock was broken midway through the half, Cristoir Maher’s perfectly flighted free kick finding Salter, who timed his run perfectly before a neat flick found the bottom corner to give the visitors a deserved 1-0 half time advantage.

United upped the tempo on the restart and Danny Doyle had spurned two great chances before taking a third to put Crettyard two goals clear on 55 minutes. Any hopes of a revival from the hosts were gone five minutes later when Salter netted his second of the game on the hour. The remaining 30 minutes saw United give a lesson in game management as they comfortably saw off the threat from Enniskerry to advance and reward the efforts of Cristoir Maher, Lee Salter and Jack Brady.

Lee Salter bagged four goals as United completely outclassed their visitors on Sunday morning.

Celtic’s high defensive line frustrated United for the first 20 minutes but once Gearoid Cuddihy released Salter to open the scoring the result was never in doubt. A neat lob from Cristoir Maher made it 2-0 on the half hour. Tom O’Neill did have an effort on target for Celtic but it was a rare venture upfield and United soon had their third, Salter again with the finish to see Crettyard comfortably ahead at the break.

There was no let up from the hosts in the second half as the wheels well and truly came of the Ballymurphy wagon. With United virtually camped on the edge of the Celtic penalty area the goals came thick and fast. Salter completed his hat trick before a brace from Danny Doyle made it 6-0. Salter again found the net for a fourth time and substitute Luke Maher got on the scoresheet twice to make it 9-0. There was still time left for Bobby Dowling to score as United hit double figures before the referee mercifully sounded the final whistle and put Celtic out of their misery.

Best for United were Salter, Bobby Dowling and Luke Ramsbottom while Paul Foley, Alan Curran and MJ Doran kept going until the end for Celtic.

St Joseph's FC 0 - 7 Crettyard United

St Joseph’s 0

Crettyard United 7

This game started at a frantic pace with both teams flying into tackles in the early exchanges as they sought to dominate the game.

Joey’s had the first clear-cut chance on five minutes when a long clearance out of their defence went over the top of the Crettyard defence took a crazy bounce and Matthew Gleeson lobbed it over Sean Dollard in Crettyard’s goal and all he then had to do was tap it home but Orrie Doran got back to make a last-ditch clearance to prevent the score. This near reverse spurred on Crettyard and they began to take full control of the game with Jamie Maher and Luke Phillips linking up well to score a goal apiece after fifteen minutes to give Crettyard a 0-2 lead and settle any nerves they may have had. Jamie Maher went on to score another two goals to complete a fine hat-trick before the interval to make the score 0-4 to Crettyard with Joey’s hardly having had a look in.

The second half was much more of the same although Joey’s managed to keep Crettyard at bay for twenty minutes but it was that man Jamie Maher who scored again to give him a personal tally of four goals and a 0-5 score line. This dominant display by Crettyard was completed with two excellent goals from super-sub Brian O’Sullivan, the first came from a great team move and he finished into the corner of the net with a fine left-foot shot for 0-6 and then he completed the scoring after a Luke Phillips shot hit the crossbar and he reacted the quickest as he tapped home to make the final score 0-7 in what was a decisive victory.

Standing out for Crettyard were John Brennan, Ian Shanahan, Bryan McMahon and Kyle Rice, whilst Joey’s showed tremendous team spirit throughout the game which should stand to them as the season progresses.
