Crettyard United v Forth Celtic
Lfa U18 Cup 26/10 14:30
Crettyard United 0 - 4 Forth Celtic

Crettyard United AFC 0 – 4 Forth Celtic AFC.

Crettyard never really got going in the very early stages, as they found themselves 0-2 down, only four minutes into the game, after a ‘lightning’ start by Forth and it was going to be ‘an uphill climb’ for Crettyard from then on. With their comfortable lead, Forth sat back and tried to draw Crettyard on to them, so that they could attack on the counter and they were very strong in defence and Crettyard could make no headway through them.

A minute before half-time, Forth got another goal, from a ‘wonder strike’ direct from a free-kick for 0-3 and that was the score at the interval.

The second half was absolutely disastrous for Crettyard, as they had to play the rest of the match with only nine men, having had a man sent off and an injury. Forth continued to press and they added another goal for 0-4, as the ball was prodded past the Crettyard keeper and that’s how it ended, with Forth progressing to the next round. Crettyard were not at their best on the day, although, Ian Shanahan and John Brennan did stand out for their battling qualities, but Crettyard were well beaten by a great team performance from the Forth lads.

Corach Rangers v Crettyard United
20/10 11:00
Corach Rangers 1 - 2 Crettyard United

Corach Ramblers 1

Crettyard United 2

United advanced to the next round as Danny Doyle’s goal on the hour mark proved the difference between the teams.

Crettyard began well and dominated possession but without creating too much in front of goal. The breakthrough came on 25 minutes when Craig Comerford chased down a lost cause and was fouled in the process resulting in a penalty for the visitors, Bobby Dowling making no mistake from the spot to make it 1-0. With half time approaching United looked comfortable but some slack defending resulted in a penalty for the hosts and the teams went into the break at 1-1.

United again dominated possession in the second half and deservedly were in front on the hour, Doyle out jumping everyone to force the ball over the line for what proved to be the winner. United held off the typical late assault as Corach went in search of an equaliser and booked their place in the draw for the next round thanks to the efforts of Mikey Byrne, Mark Lyons and Craig Comerford.

Freebooters AFC v Crettyard United
fai u18 cup 19/10 14:00
Freebooters AFC 3 - 0 Crettyard United

Freebooters AFC 3

Crettyard United 0

This game started with Freebooters dominating the early exchanges and seeing plenty of possession and it took Crettyard a long time to try and match the pace set by last year’s Leinster finalists.

With just twenty minutes played Crettyard were rightly punished for a succession of sloppy passes which ended up with Freebooters winning the ball putting Zach Bay Hammond the former Carlow-Kilkenny AFC player in possession and he beat his man and scored to give Freebooters a 1-0 lead. Crettyard reacted well to this reverse and looked the more likely team to score, through Jamie Maher, who cut in from the left wing and shot but the Freebooter’s keeper was more than equal to the task and made a fine save, to thwart Crettyard. Crettyard pushed forward to press Freebooters, but they committed too many players forward and were caught out by a lightning and devastating counterattack, with Zach Bay Hammond being played through on goal and scored for his brace and a 2-0 score line and that was the half-time score.

The second half wasn’t as fast paced as the first but both teams created plenty of good chances with Crettyard hitting the woodwork twice and they also forced Freebooter’s keeper to pull off a great save to prevent Jamie Maher from scoring. Freebooters then killed the game off with a third goal after the Crettyard defence failed to clear their lines from a cross and it was 3-0 and there was no coming back from that deficit. The score doesn’t show how close this game was but the difference was that Freebooters were much more clinical in front of goal in this well contested game.

Best for Crettyard on the day were Ben Crotty, Tadgh Dunne, Bryan McMahon and Sean Dollard, whilst it an excellent team performance from Freebooters, who progress to the next round.
