Premier side Crettyard had a tough encounter against Division One side Slaney Rovers before eventually coming out on top in Rathvilly on Sunday.

The home side started brightly and had the best of the chances in the first half when a fine strike by Andy Foley brought out a great save from Kevin Young. Foley had another effort go wide of the target. The visitors created very little in the way of scoring chances and the half ended scoreless.

The Laois side took the lead five minutes into the second half when a surging run by Ger Murray led to a corner which Lee Salter scored at back post. The home side pressed hard for an equaliser and Peter Kehoe showed great control in the box and drilled the ball home on 60 minutes. Crettyard responded almost immediately when sub Luke Maher got on the end of a great move involving Aaron Morris to tap home from close range on 74 minutes. Back came Slaney and Daniel O’Brien put Andy Foley in to blast home a deserved equaliser. However, Crettyard had the last say when they were awarded a penalty on 86 minutes and new signing Bobby Dowling cracked home the spot kick to see his side through to the last four.

Best for Crettyard were Niall Purcell, James Rothwell and Pierce Nash while Regan Murphy, Dylan Connors and Daniel O`Brien stood out for Rovers.

Five minutes later Evan Philips netted after good work from Salter to leave it 3-0 at half time.

Any slim hopes that Wolfhill had of getting back into the game evaporated as they were reduced to ten men and the flood gates opened. Salter (2), Philips (2) and Bobby Dowling all finding the net to make it 9-0 before a fine effort from Adam Purcell finished off the scoring as United hit double figures for the second week in a row.

Best for United included Craig Comerford, Niall Purcell and Bobby Dowling.
