Killeshin FC 1 - 3 St Fiacc's FC

Killeshin FC 1

St Fiacc’s 3

This was the old cliché a game of two halves as Fiacc’s raced into 3-0 half time lead.

The ever improving Killeshin outfit refused to lie down however and were soon back in the game with a well taken strike from Lisa Flynn. Try as they did, they couldn’t make a further dent in the score line but were rewarded with some good performances by Lucy Gaffney, Ciara Townsend and Becky Wrafter.

Newpark AFC v Ballymurphy Celtic
19/01 14:30
Newpark AFC 2 - 1 Ballymurphy Celtic

Newpark FC 2

Ballymurphy Celtic 1

This was Newpark's first game back since November and it showed as they were very rusty from the start.

Ballymurphy took full advantage of that and took the lead after 20 minutes through Michelle Kelly. This spurred Newpark into action who started pressing the Ballymurphy goal and this pressure paid off when Newpark equalised just on the stroke of half time when Ebony Masuku latched onto a loose ball and buried it into the bottom corner of the net. Both teams went in search of a winner and as a result would lead to an entertaining half.

In the 75th minute Newpark had a great chance when a ball over the top was collected by Denise Doyle and was unlucky to slot it inches wide of the post. Ballymurphy had a good chance that was saved by Jayne Meagher in the Newpark goal. Then with 7mins to go a free kick swung in by Abbie Wall was bundled over the line by Kellyanne Moran. That's the way the game ended and Newpark were by happy to collect their first three points of the new year.

Best for the winners were Abbie Wall, Denise Doyle, Rosie Miller and Ebony Masuku while Emma Cooper, Ann Murphy and Stacey Hennessy did well for Ballymurphy.

Thomastown United v Hanover Harps
19/01 14:30
Thomastown United 4 - 1 Hanover Harps

Thomastown United 4

Hanover Harps 1

Thomastown started this top of the table encounter much the stronger and were deservedly ahead on 15 minutes when Sarah Barcoe found the top corner from 25 yards.

The Hanover response was immediate and were level within 5 minutes when Leanne Tumelty’s fierce drive could only be parried by the Thomastown keeper and Rachael Whelan fired home the rebound. Sarah Barcoe would prove to be a torn in the side of the Hanover defence all day and on the half hour mark had her second when she latched onto Eva Haynes pass and her first time shot found the inside of the far post. Hanover probably should have levelled just before the break when another Tumelty cross found the usually reliable Essmay Murphy but she fired over from close range.

With the second half becoming more and more stretched as it progressed the pace in the Thomastown attack would prove to be the difference. On 65 minutes from a Hanover corner, they broke decisively and a Barcoe ball across the box somehow got to the back post where Aisling Brennan was waiting to pounce with a neat finish. With Hanover pushing to get back into proceedings they were caught on the break late on where the prolific Eva Haynes wrapped up a big three points for the Kilkenny side.

Jenny Brennan, Eva Haynes and the impressive Sarah Barcoe excelled for Thomastown while Leanne Tumelty, Kelly Nolan, Marie Hynes and Becky Walsh did well for Hanover.

Hanover Harps B v Slaney Rovers B
Div Two 19/01 14:30
Hanover Harps B 0 - 1 Slaney Rovers B

Hanover Harps 0

Slaney Rovers 1

Hanover slipped to their fourth defeat of the season as they fell to within three points of the bottom of the table.

Slaney took the game to Hanover and were dominant for most of the first half. Craig Walker in the Hanover goal was called into action early on to deny the Visitors an early lead. Hanover registered their first shot on target through Kuba Dobosz with 17 minutes on the clock. Slaney got a deserved breakthrough on 27 minutes. An accurate corner from Colin Byrne found Jake Elliot who headed home. Walker made two more saves before half time and Dillon Murphy had Hanover’s best chance on 40 minutes but it remained 0-1 at the break.

Hanover finally woke up in the second half as Dylan Walsh and Aaron Wynne both tested the Rovers keeper in the opening ten minutes. Walsh also sent a shot goal bound on the hour mark but it hit a Hanover player on the line. Kuba Dobosz was played in by Wynne on 62 minutes but his shot trickled wide. Hanover were dominating at this point. Glenn Nolan raided down the left then squared to Aaron Wynne but his effort cleared the bar on 65 minutes. Craig O’Reilly tried his luck with 15 minutes remaining but found the side netting! Hanover’s next opportunity fell to Charlie Seballa who passed two defenders but couldn’t apply the finish from close range. Slaney had the lion’s share of chances in the first half and Hanover had more than an equal amount in the second but failed to score.

Best for Hanover were Craig Walker, Eric Dowling and Michael Ryan.

Vale Wanderers B v St Patricks Boys B
Div Two 19/01 14:30
Vale Wanderers B 1 - 2 St Patricks Boys B

Vale Wanderers 1

St. Patrick’s Boys 2

The Superbowl hosted a close game between two good sides.

Pat’s controlled the game from start to finish but couldn’t take advantage of the amount of possession they had due to the heroics of the Vale goalkeeper Evan Tunstead.

Pat’s were quickest out of the blocks in the second half when a Dinny Farrell corner went directly into the top corner of the Vale goal. Pat’s dominated possession and went two ahead when a cross from the left-hand side found Pauric Quinlan whose strike found the back of the net. With five minutes left a lapse in concentration allowed Vale’s Dylan Walters in to slot nicely to the Pat’s net to give them hope of a comeback. Pat’s saw the game out after tip off and claimed all three points.

Best for Pat’s were David Brennan, Pauric Quinlan and Danny Alsybury. Best for Vale were Pat Meaney, Dylan Waters and Evan Tunstead.

Nurney Villa v St Joseph's FC
Div Two 19/01 12:00
Nurney Villa 3 - 2 St Joseph's FC

Nurney Villa 3

St. Joseph’s 2

Nurney claimed their first win in five games on Sunday beating the young Joeys side at home.

The visitors settled well and Andy O’Brien in the Nurney goal had to save well from Kit Gaffney. Nurney then has a good spell and took a 42nd minute lead when Joe Byrne headed in a John Townsend cross for a 1-0 half-time lead.

Joey’s levelled on 67 minutes following a defensive mix up, Ciaran Doyle scoring the equaliser. Villa regained the lead when Michael Murphy blasted home only for Daniel Donegan to level again with a fine volley. The winner came from a Michael Murphy free kick from 25 yards on 89 minutes. In injury time Murphy had a chance to complete his hat trick and secure the points but his penalty kick was saved by the Joseph’s keeper.

Best for Nurney were Andy O’Brien, Jack Rowan and Colin Townsend. It was an impressive all-round team performance from a young, talented St Joseph’s side who were unfortunate not to take any points from this game.

Bagenalstown AFC v Round Tower Rovers
Div Two 19/01 12:00
Bagenalstown AFC 2 - 0 Round Tower Rovers

Bagenalstown AFC 2

Round Tower Rovers 0

Bagenalstown had a tough encounter with Round Towers on an icy morning.

The game was evenly contested throughout and the gap between the two teams in the table seemed to be irrelevant as both sides shared the possession. Town tried hard to break down the strong and physical Rovers defence and found a breakthrough after a long throw from Paddy O’Brien found Matty Curran at the back post to tap one home. Rovers had chances and forced a great top corner save from Dan Kearney from a Towers free kick.

After the break, again Rovers sat back and Town tried to break them down. Chances went abegging and Rovers started to believe they may have a chance of getting something from the game but great work from Craig Fogarty to close down the Rovers defence found Matty Curran who squared for Trevor Nolan to make it 2-0. Town took control of the last 20 minutes and closed out the game.

Best for Town were Paddy O’Brien, Brian Murphy and Murty Cummins.

New Oak Boys B v Baltinglass Town
Division 1 19/01 14:30
New Oak Boys B 0 - 2 Baltinglass Town

New Oak Boys 0

Baltinglass Town 2

Baltinglass came out on top in this tense affair at the Burrin Road venue on Sunday.

The visitors started well and should have taken the lead on 15 minutes when a cross from Chris Heaslip failed to convert a Dylan Hosey cross. Sean Horan was again wide of the mark on 30 minutes while at the other end Stephen Preston went close for the host side but the half time arrived with the teams scoreless.

The Wicklow side hit the front on the hour mark when Ross Nolan set up Dylan Hosey to shoot to the top corner from 30 yards. Boys pushed for the equaliser and chances fell to Barry O’Driscoll and Dane Lyons but both failed to deliver. The home keeper made a great save from Mick Dowling on 70 minutes but he failed to hold onto Chris Heaslip’s effort on 85 minutes and Heaslip followed up to slot home to give his side a 2-0 win.

Best for Baltinglass were Stephen Heaslip, Kevin Osbourne and Dylan Hosey while for New Oak Shaun Geoghegan, Daniel Hayden and Dane Lyons stood out.
