Crettyard United v Newpark AFC
10/02 14:00
Crettyard United 7 - 1 Newpark AFC

Crettyard United 7

Newpark FC 1

This encounter in Killeen on Sunday was a case of the champions against the champions elect and a rampant Crettyard performance left them within a point of regaining the crown.

Newpark travelled to Crettyard today in what was horrible windy conditions to play in. Newpark playing with the wind in the first half got off to a great start when a long ball came in over the top of the Crettyard defence and their striker made no mistake from close range for Newpark to go one up on the home side. However, it wasn’t long before Crettyard equalised, Chloe Ryan was pulled down in the box and awarded a penalty. Patrice Whelan stood up and confidently placed the ball in the top right-hand corner making it 1-1. This gave Crettyard the boost they needed. Great play by Marie Meagher and Chloe Ryan found Aisling Behan unmarked in the box however the keeper made a great save, but the ball fell to Demi Donovan where she slotted it home. Another goal came just before the half when Aisling Behan struck the ball however it fumbled in the box and somehow ended up in the back of the net leaving it 3-1 at the half.

The second half started off well for Crettyard when Patrice Whelan and Alanna Waters linked up well down the left side to find Chloe Ryan on the edge of the box who placed the ball well and found the top corner of the net making it 4-1. When a freekick whipped in by Deirdre O’Shea found Aisling Behan who in turn found Demi Donovan who blasted home another goal. Newpark never gave up and attempted to push on but this in turn gave the Crettyard’s strikers ample opportunity. Chloe Ryan found Aisling Behan twice before the final whistle was blew leaving it 7-1 at the finish.

Best for Crettyard, Chloe Ryan, Clare Kelly and Demi Donovan.

Kilree Celtic v Vale Wanderers
10/02 14:00
Kilree Celtic 0 - 2 Vale Wanderers

Kilree Celtic 0

Vale Wanderers 2

These two local rivals squared off on Sunday in Bagenalstown and produced a highly entertaining encounter.

Vale settled the quicker and were unlucky not to be ahead early when Susan O’Leary and Shauna O’Neill both headed just wide. Aoife Roach was dangerous all game on the wing and was causing Kilree problems with some great deliveries into the box. Just before halftime Laura Kearney took a ball down outside the box and struck a long range shot to the back of the net.

The second half was much the same as both teams battled hard in tough conditions and had to wait until the last kick off the game for the next goal was Philomena Murphy finished smartly in the box.

Best for Vale on the day were Noleen Maher, Jacinta Kearney, Lyza O’Halloran and Shauna O’Neill.

Killeshin FC B v Hanover Harps B
Div One 10/02 14:00
Killeshin FC B 2 - 2 Hanover Harps B

Killeshin FC 3

Hanover Harps 3

Hanover dropped points for the fourth week in a row as their title hopes seem to be all but over when they let a two-goal slip.

Hanover had the first chance on 2 minutes when John Waters went close with a shot. A Killeshin set piece saw then hit the upright in the fourth minute. Chris Fingleton broke down the right on the quarter hour mark, squared to Mikey Kavanagh who shot first time but was denied by the Killeshin ‘keeper. Killeshin had a chance in the 23rd minute but Murt Phelan in the Hanover goal saved comfortably. The Hanover pressure paid off when Gary O’Keeffe centred for John Waters to score on 27 minutes. Chris Fingleton almost doubled the advantage on 35 minutes but couldn’t convert.

Alan Bolger went close from a corner on 51 minutes whilst Pat Carr saw his shot saved in the 55th minute. Killeshin had a rare attack on the hour mark but Murt Phelan in the Hanover goal pulled off a great double save. On 69 minutes, Mikey Kavanagh hit the Killeshin bar but 3 minutes later converted a penalty after John Waters was fouled in the box, giving Hanover a two-goal cushion. With 15 minutes remaining, Killeshin got through a stagnant Hanover rear guard and pulled one back through Yona Samuel. In the 92nd minute, Hanover failed to clear a cross and the ball broke to a Kaelum Hand who side footed it into an empty net to equalise.

Mick Ryan, Eric Dowling and Alan Bolger played well for Hanover. Best for Killeshin were Sean Fitzpatrick, Danny Brennan and Brendan McDonald.

Vale Wanderers B v Bagenalstown AFC
Div One 10/02 14:00
Vale Wanderers B 2 - 2 Bagenalstown AFC

Vale Wanderers 2

Bagenalstown AFC 2

An entertaining local derby saw the points shared.

A tale of two halves saw Vale come out strongest and when David Miley in the Bagenalstown defence hesitated on his clearance, Conor Byrne stole the ball off him and raced through to score. Vale continued to press, and Kieran Casey released Lee Conran but the Bagenalstown keeper pulled off a great stop from the one v one situation. Conor Byrne then intercepted a poor pass in the Bagenalstown defence, and he put Conran through, and Vale’s top scorer made no mistake and he put Vale 2-0 up. Bagenalstown responded well and just before half time, their right winger Matty Curran controlled the ball on his chest and produced a great bicycle kick to pull one back.

Bagenalstown really took the game to Vale in the second half and asked serious questions of the Vale defence and with five minutes left, Bagenalstown’s Trevor Nolan finally got the break his tireless work rate deserved when he out muscled Emmet Casey to race through on goal, he whipped the ball across the box and Jake O’Hara arrived in at the back post to tap home. Bagenalstown nearly grabbed the winner when Nolan won a header in the box but Vale’s ‘keeper produced a great save to keep his team in it.

Best for Vale were Conor Byrne, Kieran Casey and Adam Dunne, Best for Town were Trevor Nolan, Craig Fogarty and Jimmy Cullen.

Wolfhill Athletic v Parkville United B
Div One 10/02 11:00
Wolfhill Athletic 2 - 3 Parkville United B

Wolfhill Athletic 2

Parkville United 3

A rapidly improving and well organized Wolfhill team pushed league leaders Parkville all the way today in a high-quality game in The Swan.

The hosts almost took the lead on four minutes when a long ball over the top from Billy Campion was lobbed just over the onrushing Damian Bak in the goal but skimmed the crossbar.

The second half saw Parkville score with the first play of the game with TJ Kavanagh on hand to set up Joe Morris who slalomed his way through the defence and opened the scoring despite the keeper getting his fingertips to the ball as Wolfhill misjudged the ball over the top. Parkville’s lead was short lived and veteran PJ Rowan curled in a rocket of a free kick to the top corner of the net from the corner of the 18-yard box. Parkville’s title credentials looked to be seriously tested on 58 minutes when Colin Campion reacted first to and Parkville trailed 2-1 and were playing into a ferocious wind but they battled hard for every ball and with 12 minutes to go, Paddy Hickey flung all of his giant frame at the ball to stop a dangerous Wolfhill attack and from the resultant break away, TJ Kavanagh drove down the right hand wing and crossed for Niall Byrne who was on hand to level the game with an expert finish to the bottom corner. With time running out, up stepped the evergreen Paddy Byrne who jinked right, jinked left and let fly with the outside of this boot to the top corner to give Parkville the lead with four minutes of normal time remaining. This was the toughest of comebacks and Parkville were not to be denied.

On a day when the whole squad played their part, Lee Kavanagh, Joe Morris and TJ Kavanagh stood out.

Div One 10/02 14:00
Nurney Villa B 0 - 7 St Patricks Boys B

Nurney Villa 0

St. Patrick’s Boys 7

A good game was completely dominated by the away side.

Pat’s were gifted an early goal as the Nurney goalkeeper spilled a cross and John O’Neill was on hand to tap home. Pat’s then doubled their lead as Conor O’ Brien was played through on goal and he finished nicely. The third goal came through a super volley on the edge of the box from Tomas Walsh that he stuck into the bottom corner. Goal number four was finished nicely again by O’Brien after the ball bounced around in the box. O’Neill got his second of the game as he stood up to convert a penalty he’d won. The final goal of the game came from a wonderful Peenie Whelan cross where O’Neill rose highest to power home a header to complete his perfect hat-trick.

Best on the day were John O’ Neill, Peenie Whelan and Jamie Malone. Best for Nurney were Jamie McAbe, Anthony Hogan and Dermot Maher.
